Apprentice of the Year 2018: Meet the nominees - Anna-May Carey

Our next nominee is Anna-May Carey. Anna-May joined Apprenticeship Connect in 2017 as a sales apprentice within resourcing support at Diamond Resourcing after completing her final year at sixth-form. Having taken advice from her family, friends and careers advisers, Anna-May decided that an apprenticeship would offer her valuable experience to help her understand working environments and how to interact with colleagues, customers and management. It was this desire to gain hands-on experience as well as her desire to earn a salary whilst studying which prompted Anna-May to complete an apprenticeship rather than seeking full-time employment or studying at university; an apprenticeship offered her the knowledge and skill development as well as a paid salary.

We asked Anna-May if she feels completing an apprenticeship has improved her career prospects:

“I believe my apprenticeship has helped me gain confidence in myself and my ability to undertake works tasks correctly in a professional manner and within the deadlines provided. I am assured when dealing with the general public, my communication skills have become far better and I believe I am a team player.”

“After completing my apprenticeship, I have developed within my role to become a Recruitment Consultant. This is because my knowledge has expanded with learning and working at the same time. My professionalism, confidence and overall work ethic has proven that I am capable of doing well within the company; I have my apprenticeship to thank for this because without it I wouldn’t have the support and understanding of how to work in business administration.”

Anna-May was nominated for this years’ Apprentice of the Year award for showing great determination throughout her apprenticeship, always being up-to-date with her coursework and for showing perseverance to gain her functional skills award in maths when she did not pass on her first attempt. Anna-May has excelled in leaps and bounds within her job role and has demonstrated a keen desire to succeed in all that she does. After completing her apprenticeship and securing a promotion to a Recruitment Consultant within her company, Anna-May would like to continue to develop within the recruitment industry and hopes to become a Senior Recruitment Consultant supporting those with special educational needs as well as elderly citizens into employment.
