It’s hard to watch a leader you admire move on.?
Last week University of Virginia men's basketball head coach Tony Bennett made a shocking announcement: after 15 years of coaching at the school, he was retiring, effective immediately. There was no scandal, no firing, and no lucrative offer from another school. Instead, he realized he was no longer the best coach for the team, and felt he needed to step aside. ?
I grew up in Charlottesville and I've been a Virginia basketball fan since I was about 7 years old. I’m saddened because he was one of the sport’s greatest exemplars. He was the classiest coach in the game. As I've spent time the past several years studying leadership, he is one of the classiest leaders I've ever come across. His leadership style transcends the court. And everyone who knows him says he's one of the classiest people they've ever met. ?
And a pretty accomplished coach, too. Four-time ACC Coach of the Year. Two-time National Coach of the Year. Winningest coach in school history. And he won a National Championship in 2019, which I happened to be in attendance, thanks to the kindness of some generous friends (you know who you are). He’ll most certainly be inducted into the Hall of Fame one day.?
Bennett ran his entire program around what he called The 5 Pillars: humility, passion, unity, servanthood, and thankfulness. His players bought into the pillars; they not only accomplished great things on the court, but they also became great men. He even had the 5 Pillars sewn into the collar of the Cavaliers' uniforms. The best part? He’s lived the pillars in his own life.?

Even if you're not a sports fan, watch this 2.5 minute clip of his announcement.?
That’s one humble man.?
When it seems like every week there’s another leader caught in a scandal, moral failure, or abuse of power, we must remember there are still many faithful, humble, respectable people leading with excellence. And when we see them we should affirm, thank, and celebrate them.?
Thanks, Coach Bennett. You will be missed.?
