The easiest way to "get rid of" personal property may be to donate it to a charitable institution. However, those who donate without receiving an appraisal evaluation risk handing over the equivalent of thousands of dollars.
Years ago, I did an appraisal for an institution which had accepted a donation of a small hand-crafted wood table. They told me that they thought it might be “something” while the donor had assumed it contained modest value.
