The coming months are having special importance for every employee. Whether you like it or not, the appraisal period is the time when your work performance is reviewed, your achievements and shortcomings are discussed, and everyone looks forward to a good raise in salary.
To make the most out of this opportunity, here are some tips that would help you to prepare better for this event.
Don’t doubt yourself
“Am I good enough to ask for a 20 per cent hike?” , “What would my manager think if I talk about my achievements?”, “Shall I talk about promotion?” The first mistake many of us make during the appraisal period is underestimating our self-worth. Therefore, don’t stay in a bubble where you forget about all the work you have done for a year and consider yourself ordinary. Respect your hard work, be confident and stop doubting your potential. Remember, “you get what you demand, you encourage what you tolerate.”
Do your homework!
Spare some time and gather all the information, statistics and evidences that prove you have done your job well. Write down how you overcome all the issues that could have impacted your project or assigned task, and let these facts do all the talking during the interview.
It is very important to mention here that you should consider the organization goal and management mindset as well. I would like to mention a classical example of Appraisal interview of Chris Gayle, Cricketer of West Indies.
Gayle:- Sir, I scored 211 Runs in 118 Balls. I made the team win the crucial match. I should get “A” rating.
Manager:- You hit 17 Sixes and 23 Fours. Though, that is good but that is not something new you have done. That is why we hired you. As this is not something new, I will mark it as “Innovation Lacking”.
Gayle:- But sir, I played according to the situation. I took 21 singles as well.
Manager:- Exactly, your performance is not consistent. You played 15 Dot Balls as well. This means, you failed to optimize the resources.
Gayle:- But…
Manager:- Also, I would like to mention that you are not a team player. The whole team scored 112 and you all alone made 211.
Gayle:- What??
Manager:- Yes. So, overall, you are getting a “C” rating for the year. Improve Consistency, Innovation, Utilization and Team Work
Feedback
It is obvious that your performance would be evaluated and you would be getting feedback about the same. Whenever you think your performance has been perceived in the wrong manner, make sure you politely speak up and defend yourself. Also, in case you have made some mistakes or have recognized your weak areas, own up and talk about the lessons you have learnt and how you plan to work on them now.
Reflect on what you need
This period is also the perfect time to reflect on the way your career is heading. Are you satisfied with your current profile? Where do you want to see yourself in the coming years? Does this job offer enough learning opportunities? Most importantly, what can you do to achieve your professional goals? Brood over carefully and the answer to these questions will help you decide what you can do to improve your professional life.
