Applying Thoughtful Design to the Emergency Services
HLM Architects
Sustainable Architecture, Interiors, Landscapes and Masterplanning practice with a Thoughtful Design ethos at its heart
I'm pleased to share our 2023 Emergency Services brochure, which gives an overview of our work over the years as the emergency services and their requirements have evolved.
Below is a brief introduction; you can download the full brochure here, or contact me directly at: [email protected].
Our approach to Emergency Services design is operationally led. We have invested time and resource into understanding the most important needs of the emergency services to deliver their work efficiently and safely.
We work closely with all clients to ensure their visions are realised, placing them at the heart of the communities they serve and enabling people to live safe, fulfilling lives.
Fire Stations
Each station is unique, reflective of its locality in the chosen site and the facilities to reflect its specific operational needs. We have designed numerous bespoke training facilities which reflect the local operational needs, and provide the firefighters with specific skills and experience to address their unique local requirements.
Whilst our fire station buildings have been praised for their aesthetic design and won architectural awards, the most pleasing and important results are the improvements to firefighter turnout times. These improved turnout times have been achieved by understanding each station’s operational requirements and processes with the firefighters, and designing the building around their needs.
Deep operational understanding, consideration of the community's requirements, and ensuring comprehensive staff support, are all key to delivering stations which strengthen the relationship between the service and the community.
Police Stations
Delivering buildings that fully support the functions required in and around them, enhancing operational efficiency and rising to security challenges associated with police facilities, while recognising the public interface and the requirement to provide stress-free environments for both the public and staff.
Ambulance Services
Our team have delivered numerous projects, covering:
- Operation Deployment
- Support Accommodation
- Specialised Critical Infrastructure
- Emergency Call Receiving
- Control Rooms
- Major Incident Facilities
- Silver Command Suites
All of these are supported with statutory 200-hour resilience and counter-terrorism measures.
Thoughtful design and the desire to make spaces and places that improve lives sits at the heart of everything we do.
