Few days ago, I saw a tweet by an acquaintance. He reflected on opportunities he missed because his course was not mentioned as part of the requirements. In previous articles and letters, I have spoken extensively about applications, and requirements. Today I will still talk about them.
How many courses does your university offer? How many courses do you think exist globally? Imagine, a global application having to list all the courses that currently exist on an application flyer, advert or Term of Reference (TOR) it will be chaotic.
We miss the opportunities that we fail to apply for.
A key tip to note when applying is to harness transferable skills from a growth or learning experience and show how it is relevant for the role you are applying for.
When we want to do something we do it before talking about it but when we are unsure of what we want to do. We talk about it and say "I want to do ...".
I have a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Physics-Applied Geophysics. 7 years ago I started building a career in the social impact sector and other sectors. I have lost opportunities to rejections but I would have lost more if I was waiting for my course to be listed. Sometimes you just need to make it to the interview stage to speak about the direct role or sector or opportunity you want. Sometimes the opportunity on my mind might not be what was in-sight but it is a means to an end and as long as a win, is a win you will be happy.
You may or may not get a rejection from an application. When compared to yesterday, there are many more opportunities that are available today than those that were available yesterday.
Apply for opportunities because you will only be qualified for them for a season.
Apply until people know you well enough to recommend you for opportunities.
Apply until your name is mentioned in rooms that matter and you step into them.
Apply because one opportunity can change your life forever.
RIP to opportunities we were timid to apply for!
RIP to opportunities we missed because of procrastination.
RIP to opportunities we missed because we were camera shy.
RIP to opportunities we missed because of internalizing rejection from a previous application.
RIP to opportunities we missed because we refused to learn video editing.
RIP to opportunities we missed because we did not tailor our transferable skills.
The submission that you got a rejection for might get you an acceptance in another application.
APPLY! APPLY!! APPLY!!!
Keep your mind open till you hear my next thoughts,
D Oracle!
