Apply! EUR 20 million Climate Initiative’s Thematic Call Funding Programme

Through the Thematic Call funding instrument, the IKI is dedicated to financing substantial projects aimed at promoting a sustainable, biodiversity-friendly, and low-emission economy. The initiative focuses on several key objectives: - Enhancing the legal framework at national and sub-national levels in partner countries to bolster efforts in emission reductions, adaptation strategies, and biodiversity conservation, ensuring effective implementation across sectors. - Contributing to direct and indirect emission reductions within partner countries over the medium term. - Supporting individuals affected by climate change in IKI partner nations, helping them adapt to its impacts. - Mobilizing funds from both the public and private sectors to finance climate and biodiversity initiatives.

Thematic Priorities The thematic priorities align with the responsibilities of one of the three federal ministries governing the IKI: the BMWK, the BMUV, or the AA. The available thematic priorities include:

- Advancement of collaborative approaches for the implementation of Article structures. - Improvement of building energy efficiency.

- Promoting climate-friendly transport systems.

- Expanding innovative financing solutions for the decarbonization of energy-intensive industries (BMWK).

- Development and execution of innovative financing models and programs for the sustainable conservation of primary forests and the restoration of semi-natural forests (BMUV). - Conservation, sustainable management, and restoration of critical wetlands to support biodiversity and climate action (BMUV).

- Transitioning from Blue Carbon to Blue Value through locally-led initiatives for coastal marine ecosystem services (BMUV), along with building climate resilience by protecting vulnerable watersheds in South America (BMUV).

- Fostering climate resilience to mitigate conflicts and sustain peace (Federal Foreign Office).

Funding Information The IKI provides funding ranging from EUR 5 million to a maximum of EUR 20 million per project.

Duration Funding can last up to eight years, with an option for a preparatory phase of up to nine months to prepare project applications.

Eligibility Criteria Eligible organizations include:

- Non-governmental organizations

- Universities and research institutions

- International intergovernmental organizations and institutions (e.g., development banks)

- United Nations organizations and programs

- Private companies, along with economic sector and trade associations

Ineligibility Criteria Organizations that cannot apply for IKI funding include:

- Government agencies, whether national or regional, as they are generally not eligible for funding.

- However, legally independent, state-owned companies providing services of general interest typically do not fall under this exclusion.
