Applications for the Applied Data Science Lab spring cohort now open
Early consideration for the?Applied Data Science Lab’s?spring cohort are now open.?
This program provides organizations with a data science proof-of-concept product or service, and aspiring data scientists with industry work experience. Guidance is provided throughout by experienced data scientists and ecosystem experts.
Individuals and organizations who apply early will be first in the queue for consideration, and will also be eligible for screening and feedback in advance of the general applications closing date.
This cohort will also have more opportunities for companies and more interns than the current Electron cohort that began last October.
The deadline for early consideration for both emerging data scientists and organizations is February 10, 2023.
Kickstarting data science careers
The Applied Data Science Lab provides an opportunity for emerging data scientists to work on real-world industry projects in a paid, work-integrated learning environment. Eligible participants can include individuals who are completing a post-secondary program in a related field, or those who are re-tooling their career through data science training.?
This spring, teams of aspiring data scientists will work with an Alberta organization to develop a prototype data application over a period of up to six months. Participants will be provided with the training, tools, digital infrastructure, and mentorship needed to upgrade and apply their data science skills.
Opportunities for organizations
The Applied Data Science Lab helps startups, small-to-medium sized enterprises, and not-for-profits trial data science methodologies to improve their efficiencies and productivity in a low-risk, low-investment environment. The Lab offers two programs based on the maturity level of the participating organizations:
Breadth Program — Lasting from two to six months, this program focuses on the “discovery” to “experimentation” phase of an organization’s data science evolution pathway. Participants will receive a prototype data application at the end of this journey.
Depth Program — Lasting six months, this program takes a deeper dive into the “discovery,” “experiment,” and “implement” stages of an organization’s data science journey. Participants will receive tangible data science products to validate their ideas.

Increased capacity thanks to federal support
Cybera is pleased to announce the Applied Data Science Lab has received funding from?Prairies Economic Development Canada (PrairiesCan)?to increase the capacity of the Applied Data Science Lab. This funding will complement the generous investment by?Alberta Innovates?to grow Alberta’s data science capabilities.
PrairiesCan's contribution will?support?development of cyberinfrastructure, tools and training that support data science workflows, and will assist in improving data science outcomes for all Applied Data Science Lab participants.
Cybera will have more news on this funding in the coming months.
Cybera's Applied Data Science Lab for Economic Development gives Alberta companies the tools and understanding to better leverage their data.?It also provides?budding data scientists real world (paid) experience.?
Through this work-integrated learning program, emerging data scientists are paired with local businesses to carry out a long-term data science / machine learning project. Cybera and its sector partners provide hands-on advice and expertise to help the projects succeed.
