In this Application Spotlight we explain how automatic microphone level control will enhance a sound system’s intelligibility.? This is ideal for any venue that supports untrained presenters (i.e., public speakers) or multiple presenters with a wide variety of speaking styles ranging from overly loud to very soft.?

First, I’ll review the key product in the system which is RDL’s HR-MCP2 Dual Microphone Compressor; a game-changer in the world of audio technology! This dual-channel microphone compressor is designed to produce consistent audio output levels with wide variations of mic input levels (up to 25 dB), as well as protect against distortion and clipping from signal overloads.? The HR-MCP2’s gain reduction is nearly instantaneous for both expected high audio peaks as well as severe input overloads.? These variations are typically caused by variety of presenter’s speaking styles, coughs, sneezes, and the occasional mic drop.?

This compressor is equally perfect for on-air broadcast, voice-over and recording studios, as well as public address systems, meeting rooms, public venues, and every commercial sound system.

The HR-MCP2 is housed in a durable half-rack-width shielded metal enclosure, suitable for free-standing use or for mounting in an optional RDL rack adapter.

In this House of Worship system example, one channel of the rack-mounted HR-MCP2 Dual Microphone Compressor is connected in-line between each church microphone and the house mixer. The HR-MCP2 automatically adjusts the volume for best intelligibility for a wide range of presenters’ speaking styles, from soft-spoken to boisterous.

Phantom voltage (IEC Standard 48 Volt) may be provided by the HR-MCP2 to power any condenser microphone. The HR-MCP2 provides transparent audio level adjustment and compression over a 25 dB range. It ensures freedom from clipping and overload distortion, providing consistent audio levels throughout a presentation, and from one presenter to the next.

This single HR-MCP2 provides automatic gain reduction for two separate microphones, one at the pulpit/lectern and one wireless (switched to mic-level output). Front-panel LED metering strings simplify proper gain adjustment. Multiple HR-MCP2 Dual Microphone Compressors can be rack mounted to control all the microphones in the church for maximum system intelligibility.
