Imagine a device that lets you silence unwanted noise in your audio system but let desired audio pass through to the amplifiers and speakers.? More specifically, what if you could set a signal threshold that automatically mutes signals below a certain level, such as open microphones picking up background chatter and HVAC noise, and unmutes when louder, desired signals from sources like live speech, live music or background music come through.? Well, that’s exactly what RDL’s ST-GLA1 Gated Line Amplifier does.? It automatically switches between mute and unmute based on the signal level, and it does it fast and silently.?

This noise gate has line level inputs and outputs that can be wired balanced or unbalanced, which are perfect for placing between audio equipment such as a mixing console and audio amplifier or powered speakers. It has adjustable input gain with two LED indicators to help you set the proper level, and gate adjustment for setting the perfect threshold sensitivity that’s unique to each sound system.?

The ST-GLA1 plays an important role in this week’s Application Spotlight by keeping audio perfectly quiet when it’s supposed to be and allowing all the desired audio through when its needed.

In this system example, we show you how just a few, cost effective Stick-On modules can transform a poor sounding monitor system into a world-class monitor system.? This same technique can be applied to any main PA system such as for classrooms, amphitheaters, meeting rooms, hotel foyers, HOWs, entertainment facilities, live PA systems, and more.

Audio monitor speaker signals often contain unwanted noise that is distracting to performers between musical selections or when the monitors are not in use. Examples include ambient pickup from live microphones or hum from instruments. During these periods when performers are not actively listening to the monitors, the RDL ST?GLA1 (use 2 for stereo as shown) mutes the audio signal to the monitor amplifier(s). The muting threshold is adjusted on the module to activate the audio for valid signal levels. The monitors will be muted at all other times. This application may be used in installations using either fixed or portable monitor speakers. It is ideal for church choir monitors or any performance area using stage monitors.
