Application Performance Analysis with Focused Insights for SAP Solution Manager

How to build a dashboard for system performance analysis with Focused Insights to quickly identify the root causes of performance issues like slow transactions, batch jobs in error, number of errors per user-id, ...

Summary

We use E2E Workload Analysis SAP Solution Manager BeX Queries with an hourly granularity and the metrics collected by System Monitoring .

We correlate in Focused Insights the performance indicators (CPU, number of users, overall response time, ..) with the detailed information for transactions and batch jobs.

This dashboard uses two types of charts: time series for trend analysis and table charts for detailed analysis. In addition, the tables time dimension is bound to the time series in order to correlate data peaks with the details of the system activities.

Step 1: Create a 3*2 OCC dashboard

The OCC dashboard will be based on an hourly granularity:

Step 2: Time series chart

The first 3 charts display the number of users (dialog, http, rfc), the system response time and the CPU consumption.

Step 3: Tables chart

The last 3 gadgets display key measurements (Avg. response time, nb of dialog steps, ...) for individual transactions or batch reports.

The corresponding data sources are build on custom BeX Query Views created with the transactions RSRT1 and the query 0CCMSMTPH_WA_Q0001_H by selecting the Free Characteristics "Transaction" or "Report" as main dimension.

Step 4: Link tables chart to time series chart

As a final step, we bind the table views with the time series chart by using the “Relations” tab to select the "Dependants" gadgets that will adapt dynamically their time dimensions:

Step 5: Start analysis

When selecting a time frame from the "Response Time" chart, the table charts will adapt their time period to provide you with insights on the transactions activities for your systems.
