Application of Life Cycle Assessment in Green Chemistry

Life cycle assessment is an approach to understand the potential environmental impact throughout the product(s) life cycle. It's a method that enables us to understand product in more detail manner. LCA follows standard ISO 14040, ISO 14044 which describes the particular steps involved.


Due to its broad applicability and its validity, the LCA methodology has gained worldwide acceptance as a useful tool for process development, strategic planning as well as policy making. Today, LCA is increasingly accepted as an assessment tool in green chemistry as it aligns well with the principle of green chemistry. It is applied on the pilot project as well as on production scale.

LCA is being utilized to compare conventional chemical reactions with new and more efficient catalytic chemical reactions in terms of terrestrial ecotoxicity, aquatic ecotoxicity, CO2 eq or any other impact category thereby reducing the negative impacts of chemical product or processes on human health and the environment. By this they can get the answers to the questions whether the requisite stoichiometry of chemical constituents may hinder the environmental improvements.


The LCA results can help in revealing hotspots area in any major reactions or the chemical constituents which may be worked upon to improve the overall efficiency reaction. Thus, LCA helps in designing safer chemical products and processes.
