The Application of The Four Agreements to Project Management

The Application of The Four Agreements to Project Management

Don Miguel Ruiz, in his book "The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom (A Toltec Wisdom Book)," delineates four fundamental principles aimed at helping individuals attain personal liberation. I have positioned these agreements on my refrigerator to serve as daily reminders. While they may appear simplistic, adhering to these principles in our daily lives can be demanding. Here, I'll illuminate how these principles can be employed in a professional setting.

"Be impeccable with your word" is the first principle. This stresses the importance of expressing oneself clearly and confidently. It's crucial to question and probe ideas, and to always engage in conversations with respect and politeness.

The second principle, "Don't take anything personally," instructs us not to interpret actions of others as a reflection of our worth. Stakeholders each have unique perspectives and interests, which will likely influence their contribution to your project. It's essential to step back, view the larger picture, and integrate these varied perspectives, all the while keeping the overarching project goals in focus.

"Don't make assumptions," the third agreement, reminds us of the dangers of unspoken presuppositions. When it comes to stakeholders or your team, avoid making assumptions on their behalf. If assumptions are necessary, ensure they are openly communicated to prevent any misunderstanding.

The final agreement, "Always do your best," is a call to consistently strive for excellence. Your team and stakeholders deserve the best of your abilities. Understandably, your best may fluctuate due to risks, pressing deadlines, and other variables. Regardless of these factors, it is vital that you persist in delivering your best work. Approach your tasks proactively, lead your projects with vigor, and infuse your work with positive energy.

This is well written Farooq. How often we can forget that it’s not always about us when a stakeholder is upset or demanding. We cannot control others but we can control how we react to the situations around us! The world is cruel. Choose kindness, always. A quote I adore by our former First Lady Michelle Obama “When they go low, we go high.” Miss you Farooq. ??
