We are now five states closer to avoiding the hassle of fumbling through our bags at security checkpoints for our driver’s licenses, thanks to Apple’s expansion of digital state IDs in the iPhone Wallet app!
In 2022, Apple launched its digital ID technology in Arizona and Maryland. Since then, it has expanded to three more states: Colorado, Georgia, and Ohio. More states are set to offer driver’s licenses and state IDs in Wallet soon, with Connecticut, Hawaii, Iowa, Kentucky, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Puerto Rico, and Utah planning to introduce this feature in the coming weeks and months.
How does the app work?
To add a digital ID to your iPhone, open the Wallet app, tap the "+" button, select "Driver's License or State ID," and follow the instructions for verification. Once approved, your digital ID will be stored on your iPhone, and you can add it to your Apple Watch for easy access at the airport.
Using your ID at TSA security checkpoints
Once your state ID is on your iPhone, use it at TSA checkpoints by tapping your iPhone near the reader, completing a Touch ID or Face ID scan, and having your picture matched with your ID. It’s still best to carry your physical ID just in case though. If you're worried about privacy, your personal information won’t be shared with Apple during setup, and screenshots of your digital ID are off-limits.
