Is Apple's Design(UX) going downhill?

Apple has struggled on the UX design front over the last few years. You can see some of the problems in both the hardware and the software across a number of products but I'm going to go deep on just one feature that you use every day the lock screen.
The original Apple Human Interface Guidelines provided guidance for the design of simple and easy to use applications. Over the years Apple has simplified these guidelines and moved away from some of the practical advice. I'm hoping they get back to improving the UX of Apple and getting back to the core principals of design.

Great little "historical review", Greg... yeah, I imagine that some of the missing "reversible gestures" are because once you're in the (event-loop) of the "target app" -- e.g. in the camera or the (windowless?) notification-center -- you no longer have the context for what "back" (or un-swipe) means at that point. Haven't written stuff for iOS in a while, now, but that might be part of it -- though, by leveraging "non-public" portions of their API, you'd think that at least Apple could "force" those special actions-from-the-home-screen to work "as expected". :) Thanks, and hope all is well in Boston! best, --dk
