As chatbots such as OpenAI's ChatGPT become increasingly popular, Apple is said to be developing its own large language model and has apparently forbidden employees from using external chatbots while working on developing its own model, according to reports from The Wall Street Journal.
Apple is concerned that such programs could breach proprietary company information. As part of their tvOS 16.4 beta release, they have begun testing Siri's natural language generation capabilities as part of this test.
What is Generative AI?
Artificial intelligence (AI) appears to have reached its turning point, from students saving time writing essays to leaders at global tech companies rejoicing at what it could accomplish in the future. One particularly intriguing and disruptive use of AI today is generative, which allows machines to generate their own data for use in training machine learning models or creating synthetic data for self-driving cars.
Generative AI is an emerging technology that is revolutionizing multiple industries and applications. By producing text, images, and video it allows businesses to automate manual tasks more easily, improve customer service responses more rapidly, create different forms of content more economically than before, identify promising drug compounds faster, film/media companies to produce content more economically while engineering firms use it quickly build and adapt prototypes more easily.
These exciting tools have created much anticipation and excitement; however, they also raise many ethical considerations of AI. While traditional AI systems perform specific tasks to learn, generative AI systems produce output based on assumptions and intuition which raise ethical concerns - particularly with images and texts generated using such AI that mimic real world situations - which has led to concerns regarding accuracy, trustworthiness and hallucinations.
Generative AI relies on neural networks, comprised of neurons that learn from input and process data, connected in various ways to form different patterns and rules. When fed enough training data, these networks can then be used to generate images or texts and be tested and refined for greater results over time.
What is OpenAI’s ChatGPT?
ChatGPT stands as an impressive example of Generative AI technology. Driven by GPT-3, one of the largest language processing AI models ever devised, it logs conversations using context data from conversations and uses this to form responses that sound natural while remaining grammatically correct; additionally it can collect follow-up questions and reply in conversational format to them. But ChatGPT does have some limitations: according to The New York Times it may exhibit racial or gender biases, as well as produce answers that may seem nonsensical or incoherent; students could use ChatGPT as cheating devices on exams/papers which educators worry about as an issue.
Apple is restricting ChatGPT use among its own employees due to concerns that it might pose a security risk, according to documents obtained by The Journal. Amazon and Samsung also ban their staff from using large language model tools due to this concern.
Even so, significant efforts have been undertaken to enhance ChatGPT's reliability. Now it has rules designed to prevent dangerous or inappropriate information such as how to plan murder or manufacture napalm from appearing; additionally it detects when it has been asked about topics it shouldn't provide answers for and explains why it cannot.
However, this system can still be tricked into giving misleading or nonsensical answers by reframing your question slightly differently. For example, when asked how to become rich it might respond by saying: 'Sorry but I don't know any effective solutions." Additionally, hallucinations - providing irrelevant responses when answering factual inquiries - is common with large language model systems in general.
ChatGPT's team is diligently working on its issues and hopes that its improvements will ultimately result in a more reliable system that workers can rely on to do their jobs more efficiently. If successful, ChatGPT could add its language model Siri on iPhone/iPad as well as future AI products of ChatGPT.

What is Apple’s AI Language Model?
Apple has invested heavily in machine learning and is looking to expand into generative AI. Recently, it prohibited its employees from using ChatGPT, the popular chatbot created by OpenAI due to fears it might leak proprietary information. Instead, engineers at Apple are working on building an in-house large language model.
Artificial intelligence with the purpose of creating text that reads like human speech without biases such as sexism, racism or bigotry is often sought by AI programs. To do this, models are trained with billions of examples from public sources - although if any are biased against certain people or groups their results could have unintended results; for example if an AI program were taught to respond to phrases like 'Mary had a little lamb" with "lamb," for instance it may end up producing phrases such as "little wombats had some fun".
Many companies have managed to address these concerns effectively; others have not. A notable instance was when leading AI researcher Timnit Gebru was fired from Google's AI ethics team due to a draft paper she coauthored that cast doubt upon developing such systems - an action widely condemned as indicative of their indifference towards these essential considerations.
At the same time, rivals are scrambling to add generative AI capabilities to their products. Amazon's Alexa has made inroads into search, while Google Assistant is rapidly surpassing both Apple and Amazon in voice-based contextual computing capabilities. Apple's Siri, though still capable of fulfilling her primary role well enough, lags far behind other services because it lacks context understanding capabilities which would benefit from AI augmentation.
Apple is said to be developing its own large language model and, if successful, could make major strides in contextual AI with its next-generation products. Apple has already acquired several AI startups as part of this effort and hired John Giannandrea (former Google AI Chief).
What are the benefits of Generative AI?
Generative AI provides businesses with numerous advantages they are eager to exploit, including faster content production, enhanced personalization and customization, faster learning speed and enhanced collaboration capabilities.
One of the most promising uses for generative AI technology lies within marketing. Tools like ChatGPT and Bard can quickly respond to customer inquiries in far less time than human operators can, according to analysts. Furthermore, companies can utilize it to streamline their processes by automatically producing text, images, videos, or any other media needed for promotion purposes.
Generational AI offers another distinct benefit in analytics and data augmentation, where it can generate new information that can be analyzed and utilized to create more accurate models of complex systems. This can help advance scientific and medical research while cutting costs; for instance, using it to produce images which can then be compared against real world data in order to enhance medical scan accuracy is one method used by this model.
Generative AI can also be used to produce lifelike photos, scenes, or abstract artworks. Furthermore, the technology can even modify existing images by applying various transformations such as cropping or rotating - this makes Gen AI particularly helpful for businesses that wish to give their websites or social media pages an individualistic look and feel.
Generative AI can also be utilized to produce music of varying styles and genres, providing musicians, producers, and other creative professionals with another tool in their toolbox. However, it must be kept in mind that human composers and musicians cannot yet be replaced by AI composers and musicians.
Although generative AI tools offer many potential uses, they also pose several risks. Some generative AI tools have been accused of plagiarism and copyright infringement as they produce text that closely resembles existing sources on the Internet. Furthermore, these tools may pose security threats by leaking sensitive client data if not secured correctly; this challenge can become particularly daunting in industries with restricted client information.
Regardless of these challenges, generative AI is expected to experience exponential growth over the coming years. Many companies, such as Apple, are exploring ways to incorporate this technology into their products; the tvOS 16.4 beta includes Siri's ability to generate natural language which suggests Apple may integrate generative AI into its voice assistant service.
