Apple's AI Ambitions Unveiled

Apple CEO Tim Cook has announced that the company is focusing its resources on artificial intelligence (AI) and expects to make a "significant announcement" by the end of this year.

"At Apple, we recognize the incredible creative potential of AI, which is why we are investing significantly in this area," Cook said at Apple's annual shareholder meeting held online on February 28. "We believe AI will open up opportunities to help users in the Apple ecosystem increase work productivity, solve problems, and more."

Cook did not disclose any specific AI-generated product that could compete with models like OpenAI's GPT or Google's Gemini. However, he said, "By the end of this year, I hope to share with you how we will create a new platform in the field of AI or a similar technology that we believe can redefine the future."

CEO Cook emphasized that Apple has been researching artificial intelligence for many years. Previously, the company often limited the use of the term AI, instead referring to it as machine learning.

According to Cook, some of Apple's current products have integrated AI, such as the hand-tracking tool in Vision Pro and the heart rate monitor in the Apple Watch. He also mentioned the M-series chips inside MacBook, which are capable of running AI.

During the meeting, there was no mention of Apple's self-driving car project. According to Bloomberg, the company has suspended its Project Titan electric car project after about a decade of development to focus on AI. Hundreds of hardware engineers and car designers may transition to other positions at Apple, while those who are not suitable will be dismissed.

Cook's announcement comes after AFL-CIO Equity Index Funds, a shareholder of Apple, requested the company to publicly disclose ethical principles for future AI development. Apple opposed this, stating that such action could reveal the company's trade secrets.

Apple is currently ramping up its research into artificial intelligence. Last summer, Tim Cook also hinted at Apple's ambitions in AI, emphasizing that the company has conducted research on various AI technologies and invested and innovated "responsibly." Another sign that Apple is stepping up its AI research on the iPhone is that they have acquired over 20 companies in this field over the past 7 years.
