Apple Weaves AI Into iOS 18: Drama With Musk and Comparisons With Microsoft Ensue

The AI News Articulator Issue #7 (June 7 - June 14)

Hello and welcome back to the AI News Articulator. This week saw Apple’s foray into AI as the Cupertino-based tech giant unveiled an unlikely partnership and a host of AI features at its WorldWide Developer Conference.

While Google, and Microsoft, have already made leaps in the AI space, Apple kept its AI strategy under wraps for, some might say, a little too long.?

Apple Intelligence, the iPhone maker’s long awaited AI framework, skillfully weaves AI capabilities into Apple’s operating system, and will be available this fall in the upcoming iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and MacOS Sequoia.?

Up ahead, I take a detailed look at Apple Intelligence and compare it with the controversial Windows Recall feature, to give you a better context for on-device AI, and the considerations to keep in mind about such features.?

The Apple WWDC 2024 introduced Apple Intelligence, and also some drama. The company said it is partnering with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT across its platforms.?

While Apple prides itself on user privacy, OpenAI has been in the news for a host of privacy-related issues. Which is why this unexpected partnership has people wondering about the privacy of their personal data.

The move also prompted Elon Musk to threaten a ban on Apple devices at his companies. Musk posted on X:

Apple, knowing that privacy would be an obvious concern, stated in a company blog, “Privacy protections are built in for users who access ChatGPT — their IP addresses are obscured, and OpenAI won’t store requests. ChatGPT’s data-use policies apply for users who choose to connect their account.”

Many compared Apple Intelligence to Microsoft’s Windows Recall feature, which raised many data safety concerns.?

What is Apple Intelligence and Why Does It Need ChatGPT?

Among other things, Apple Intelligence will allow users to write better, proofread text, generate unique images and search within the Images app using natural language. Some of these tasks will be powered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT.?

Considering that Apple Intelligence only uses ChatGPT in limited cases, why is it a part of Apple’s AI framework?

ChatGPT's language model trained by OpenAI is currently one of the most advanced and capable in the world. Rather than trying to match ChatGPT's capabilities from scratch, integrating it allows Apple to quickly boost Apple Intelligence's language skills in areas like providing high-quality contextual responses, superior text generation.?

Users will be able to get multi-modal answers (text, images etc.) through natural language prompts, via ChatGPT.

Privacy still remains a hot topic, considering OpenAI’s track record and has raised some questions and comparisons with Microsoft’s controversial Windows Recall feature.?

Apple Intelligence vs. Windows Recall : How Will Your Data Be Used and Stored?

A little background - Windows Recall, as you may recall (...couldn’t resist), was the AI feature that new AI integrated CoPilot Plus PCs were supposed to be getting. PCs with Recall would take screenshots of users’ screens every few seconds, store them locally, and use them to retrieve information and provide AI support.?

Security experts and users immediately called out the risk of exposing sensitive personal information including emails, bank account details, social security numbers etc.?

Microsoft, realizing that they might have done too much too soon with Recall, announced yesterday they will no longer roll out the feature to all consumers. The company now plans to restrict and preview the feature with its Windows Insider Program first.?

Apple on the other hand said it will use a combination of on-device storage and? Apple’s Private Cloud Compute (PCC). A significant portion of the user's personal data and context will be processed and stored locally on the device itself through on-device AI models, but when a user request requires more computational power then only minimal data will be sent to Apple's PCC servers over an encrypted connection, that will keep the data hidden from Apple itself.?

Here are two tables explaining the similarities and differences between Apple Intelligence and Windows Recall.?

While there are basic similarities between Windows Recall and Apple Intelligence, both features take different routes to accomplish the end goal - of enhancing productivity and ease of use through AI integration across devices.?

AI Integrations For “The Rest of Us”

Deeper AI integrations are going to be part of our personal devices, as companies compete to stay relevant and ahead in the AI race. Rather than being seen as a laggard in AI, Apple can now boast of a whole ecosystem that can offer multi-modal AI capabilities through its integration of CHatGPT in upcoming OS updates.?

Whether we find these features useful or of little use (looking at you, Genmojis), it is obvious that these AI integrations are being driven by companies, not by as Apple put it, “the rest of us”. As consumers, we need to be aware and make the right decisions when using these devices as our data and privacy is at stake.?
