Apple Vision Pro: The Future of Computing or Merely a Niche Gadget?
Apple has just unveiled its most ambitious product ever: the Apple Vision Pro. It is a mixed-reality headset that combines augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) to create immersive experiences that redefine how we interact with the digital and physical worlds. It features a custom micro-OLED display, a dual-chip design, Spatial Audio, and a 3D camera with immersive Spatial Audio and Spatial Video (that's just me reading Apple's specs).
But is it this really the future of computing, or just a niche gadget? In this post, I will share my opinions and insights on the Apple Vision Pro and the AR/VR market.
VR vs AR: Which One Will Dominate the Market? ??
The Vision Pro can effectively switch between VR and AR modes, allowing users to either immerse themselves in fully digital environments or augment their real-world surroundings with virtual elements. VR is popular for gaming, simulations, education, and training, as it creates a realistic and engaging experience that makes users feel like they are in the virtual world. However, VR has its limitations, such as the need for a bulky device on the face and the isolation from the real world. AR, on the other hand, has the potential to create the next “iPhone moment”, as it adds digital content to the real world, such as 3D models, text, or animations. AR can be used on various devices, such as smartphones, smart glasses, or heads-up displays. AR is more versatile and accessible than VR, as it can blend seamlessly with real life, enhancing our perception and offering information, entertainment, or utility. For example, AR can be used for navigation, shopping, social media, gaming, and more.
According to market forecasts (from Statista and IDC), the AR market is expected to be larger as well as grow faster than the VR market in 2024 and beyond. The AR market is projected to generate US$25.3 billion in revenue, while the VR market is projected to generate US$13.3 billion in revenue. The AR market is also expected to have a higher growth rate than the VR market. This appears to indicate that AR has more potential applications than VR in the future, this is particularly true of the mass market.

The Apple Vision Pro: A Test Bed for Future Products and Innovations ??
No doubt that the Vision Pro is awe-inspiring tech, however, I believe that it’s a niche consumer test bed product that’s merely laying the way for future products and innovations. From Apple’s perspective, this product is them developing for the future. They are experimenting with new technologies, such as micro-OLED displays, dual-chip design, and 3D cameras, that could be applied to other devices and platforms in the future. They are also creating a new ecosystem of apps, games, and content for the Vision Pro, which could be transferred to other AR or VR devices in the future. They are also building a loyal fan base and a strong brand image for their AR/VR products, which could give them a competitive edge in the market.
As for that next “iPhone moment”, it’s anyone’s guess whether the biggest winners will or won’t include Apple themselves. It will depend on how well they can innovate, adapt, and deliver on their vision of spatial computing.
What Do You Think? ??
Do you agree or disagree with my opinions and views on the Vision Pro and the AR/VR market? Do you think the Vision Pro is the future of computing or just a niche gadget? Do you think VR or AR will dominate the market in the future and who do you think will be the winners? I would love to hear your thoughts and feedback on this topic.
