Is Apple transforming itself into a Service and Media company from a Hardware company?
Here is a quick read on what I think about it :)
Unlike Apple’s style, it released hardware updates just before the most awaited March event through its website “ZERO HYPE” for new iPad and Air pods. On March 25th an event with the tag line “Its show time” was held by Apple which left the Apple fan crowd absolutely puzzled. Apple unveiled its new magazines, news subscription service, Apple card, Apple arcade, and Apple Tv & Movies. All the above services highlighted privacy as Apple’s key differentiator, by promising the customer that there will be no ads and consumer behavior will never be shared with the market. These promises address two major pain points of customers using online services. Surprisingly, this show turned out to be “Just a show”, we didn’t get to see any trailer for any of the individual shows. Majority of the products didn’t even receive a live onstage demo and most of it was just a promise (Let’s just hope it’s not Like Apple Airpower: Story for another day)
So, what is Apple trying to show to the world here? Is it trying to give a sneak peek of upcoming products with Zero/very less disclosure on its pricing?
As the entire world knows Apple has seen Biggest drop in iPhone sale since 2016, Apple recorded an 11.8% decline in iPhone sales in the fourth quarter of 2018. Apple’s strategy is getting clear now! Their strategy is to leave no stone unturned and expand their ecosystem. It is not emphasizing on building a wall like it did years before. It is making its STAR features available across every platform it may be Android or IOS. Apple’s focus will always be on its Products, these services are value additions. It also brings in diversity in its portfolio and this diversification is a very sensible move. So, I don’t think Apple is transforming into a Service and Media company, it is trying to win back the market share that it has been losing to its competitors. Historical wins of Apple proves that it’s strong enough to snatch the market from any player at any time. But will it this time? Maybe maybe not. Only time can tell us the result.
