Apple Takes an L & LinkedIn Improves Job Search | The Hi-Tech Discussion

You're reading this at 12:30pm CET, but I'm actually writing it at 1am in the same time zone – from Rome's Fiumicino airport.

Why? Well, I've been quite busy and I will spend the whole day at a course tomorrow, but I still want to keep my word. With that out of the way, let's talk tech.

Apple vs the Supreme Court

App developers can now direct their users to the web for subscriptions and in-app purchases. It's the end of an era dominated by Apple's "anti-steering" policy that made sure app makers paid their Apple Tax.

For Apple, this means they'll lose money. Billions, maybe.

For you, it means you will probably save money as app makers will probably offer lower prices outside of the App Store

What do you think? Does this ruling prove that Apple's anti-steering policy is illegal?

Ready For Your Next Job?

Amidst layoff season, LinkedIn announced new features that will help you find more relevant jobs for you. Here they are:

  • Job Collections: You will be able to expand your job options by exploring collections of relevant jobs across several industries, basically bringing to you companies you didn't even suspect existed.
  • Preferences: Finally, a tool to manage preferences easily to help you find jobs you actually want to and can work at your best.
  • I'm Interested: A button that will enable you to mark a company without applying for any role, even if there are no open positions at that company. This will enable recruiters to find your profile once there is an open position.

You can find Job Collections in the "Jobs" tab, where you'll have to find "Explore with Job Collections." Then click on those that match your preferences. You can filter by benefits if I remember correctly, as well as by industry and size of the business: Boom. Good luck.

As for the Preferences, find them again within the "Jobs" tab. Once you set them, every job posting will have the preferences that match your highlighted in green. They will include part-time, full time, remove/hybrid/on-site.

Americans get a nice extra feature as usual, for they'll be able to set a minimum pay requirement.

Apple Vision Pro is Almost Here

One of the coolest-looking, most Black Mirror-esque and perhaps even extremely useful devices Apple has ever produced: That's the Vision Pro in my opinion. Mixed reality is as cool as it gets.

However, on February 2nd, you will be able to use Apple's expensive new toy to watch 150 entertainment productions between movies and series. It will also feature a Travel Mode, and you will be able to access Disney+, Prime Video and a bunch of other streaming services (but not Netflix). Which makes me want to buy it to watch UFC Fights on ESPN+.

It will cost $3.500, and you can find the complete list of entertainment experiences available here.

Samsung: One Ring To Rule Them All?

I love fitness wearables. Not by chance I have been a WHOOP customer for well over 2 years now. And Whoop's main competitor? Not the Apple Watch, which by the way is remarkably less accurate, but the ōURA ring.

The Differentiating factor is clear here. Whoop is a strap you can put on your wrist, chest, bicep, or even hip. Oura is a ring – discreet, easy to wear, fancier-looking.

Now, turns out that Samsung is launching the Galaxy Ring, powered y AI, and full of amazing featur... ah, no. In full Samsung style, they didn't give us those.

They didn't provide a release date. They also didn't give us a price.

Which makes you wonder: Why tease a product at all, if you can't say jack sheets about it?

Do better, Samsung.

OpenAI x Arizona State University

What kind of tech week would we have if OpenAI didn't make at least one headline?

The AI first-mover juggernaut partnered with the Arizona State University to provide ChatGPT access to everyone from researchers to students in February. Everyone at ASU will be encouraged to propose new ways of using the AI chatbot to benefit student success.

This is a massive step forward: Here in Germany and educators are completely disarmed by AI. Both powerless and scare of it, they refuse to embrace it while students circle around their every attempt to prevent it use.

ASU introducing ChatGPT is a marker. A marker of evolving opinions in the education world.

This is a net positive. It might be about time the educational system starts innovating and improving, unless it wants to be left behind and break even more promises made to students.
