Apple products not what they used to be.

So I don't know if I would consider myself an Apple "Fanboy" but I do like their products. I use a MacBook Pro and an iPhone, I usually use the current models and like to keep current on Apple products.
I use technology for fun but mostly as a tool for work. I bought my first Apple computer in 2007 and it took a few months before I was really comfortable enough to consider it as a valuable tool for work. At the time I was managing my wholesale telecom operations and all our switches were running Linux and our network equipment was Cisco and for sure OS X terminal was a great tool. At the time the iPhone had just come out and the ability to run terminal on my phone was amazing. At the time I felt Apple was amazing.
Today I was considering buying a new MacBook Pro and thinking about the latest and greatest achievement from Apple is the Touch bar and having to buy a half dozen adapters in order to interconnect with my multiple monitors, SAN and network because everyone else hasn't adapted the USB-C (Thunderbolt3) connectors.
I want to like Apple, I really do but I have always believed that there is "The right tool for the right job" and more and more Apple isn't that tool. While the iPhone is always awesome and a beautiful device the latest Pixel form Google is more flexible and allows me to do more work.
While I'm not impressed with having a touch screen on my computer I do find what Microsoft is doing is wonderful. It's as if there are another company under the direction of their new CEO Nadella. They are opening up Visual Studio (Open Source), offering new Skype for Business licensing model so we can deliver a hosted Skype for Business (which is incredible), Azure generally is excellent and developing interesting technologies like Office 365, Holo Lens and many others.
For the past 10 years i have migrated from running Windows Servers, Windows Computers and Nokia cell phones to using Apple computers, Linux servers and iPhones.
Today I see a compelling story switch back to Microsoft computers, Microsoft Servers with Hybrid Azure and I think that Microsoft is going to continue this story with a new mobile offering.
I just don't see Apple doing anything that really makes a difference any more at least not the way they used to. Not that building ground breaking solutions is easy but I expect that from Apple and they are not delivering. Actually the last few years everything Apple has released has been "nothing special" at the same time everything Microsoft has been cooking up is very interesting. I'm not buying new technology today but i boot into Windows 10 and the latest servers we deployed are Windows Server 2016 with Skype for Business Enterprise deployment. We can deliver hosted Skype for Business with Exchange and Office App integration and that delivers a powerful enterprise solution.

8 年Welcome to the world of technology. If I've learned nothing else, it's that no one stays on top forever. We tell the story every day. It's a graveyard of giants and it's what keeps us employed. Those who intend to remain competitive must be innovative and not rest on their laurels. Are they really asking themselves how can we make this easier or looking at their model and deciding if it even makes sense anymore based on how the world has decided to consume technology?
