Apple announced that starting in Fall 2023 with iOS 17, developers must provide reasons for using specific APIs in their apps, including file timestamps, system boot times, disc space, active keyboards, and user default APIs. This measure aims to prevent abuse of these APIs for data collection and fingerprinting, which can identify users across apps and websites for targeted advertising. When submitting new apps or updates, developers must declare the reasons for using these APIs in their app's privacy manifest. From Spring 2024 on, apps without such declarations will be rejected. Even if users give permission to track, fingerprinting remains prohibited. Developers can only use these APIs and their data for the declared reasons, ensuring consistency with their app's functionality without using them for tracking purposes.
