As a human resources professional, I've heard my fair share of grievances over the years. Some of them are serious, like accusations of discrimination or harassment. Others, well... let's just say they're a little more lighthearted. Like the time in initial period of my career, an employee came to me because someone had stolen his apple from the fridge.
Yes, you read that right. An apple. One of the perks of working at our office was that we had a communal fridge where employees could store their lunches and snacks. But apparently, someone had taken it upon themselves to nab this particular employee's fruit.
At first, I tried to handle the situation with the gravity it deserved. After all, theft is a serious matter. But as the employee continued to describe the situation, I couldn't help but chuckle. He was so indignant about his missing apple, like it was the greatest injustice in the world.
Eventually, I had to level with him. "Look," I said, trying to keep a straight face. "I know it's frustrating to have something stolen from you. But in the grand scheme of things, it's just an apple. Let's try to focus on the bigger picture here."
To his credit, the employee eventually saw the humor in the situation too. We brainstormed a few solutions together, like labeling his food with his name or keeping it in a more secure container. And while we never did find out who took the apple, the incident became a running joke in the office for weeks.

So, what's the lesson here? Sometimes, as HR professionals, we have to deal with silly complaints that seem trivial. But that doesn't mean we can't take them seriously. Here are a few tips for handling these types of situations:
While it's true that as HR professionals we may have to deal with some pretty silly complaints at times, it's important to remember that laughter is the best medicine. Whether it's an apple theft, a missing stapler, or a wayward office plant, sometimes it's the absurdity of the situation that can bring us together and help us find solutions.
So the next time you find yourself dealing with a complaint that seems too ridiculous to be true, try to find the humor in the situation. Who knows, you might just end up with a new office joke or a hilarious story to tell for years to come. And always remember, a little laughter can go a long way in keeping things light and fun at work. Happy HR'ing!
