Appealing Financial Aid, College Deadline Changes, Updated SAI Calculator

“The greatest happiness of life is the conviction that we are loved; loved for ourselves, or rather, loved in spite of ourselves.”?

– Victor Hugo

News & Notes

1) The FAFSA fiasco continues to cause ripple effects. Since many colleges will not receive student financial info until early to mid-March, more and more schools are pushing back their deposit deadlines to May 15th or beyond. Here are some of the notable ones:

- California State University System - May 15

- University of California Campuses - May 15

- Virginia Tech - May 15

- Miami University - May 15

- Oregon State - June 1

- Kalamazoo College - June 1

Other colleges are either doing away with their financial aid priority deadlines (Marquette) or extending their application deadline (University of New Hampshire).

Colleges that require the CSS Profile are less likely to move their deposit deadlines. Make sure to keep an eye on them if you've applied, but note that they will have at least some information to offer a tentative aid package without your FAFSA info.

College Funding Coach Spotlight

Why The College Funding Coach?

When I began my career, I often called upon associate attorneys to become clients. I quickly realized that student debt was a substantial problem for most of them. These “small mortgage-sized” debts really hindered the ability to save money early on in their professional careers.

This is a major issue because it has a snowballing effect, not only in the short term but also in long-term retirement planning as well. Learning the best way to plan for these folks was a challenge, but it made me realize how important it is to educate those whose kids may face similar situations in the future.
