Apex Dynamics USA Announces Sponsorship of American Magic Racing Team

As the 37th America’s Cup gets underway in Barcelona, Spain, sail racing fans worldwide are looking forward to cheering on their favorite contenders for the coveted America’s Cup.

The America's Cup is a sailing competition and the oldest international competition still operating in any sport. America's Cup match races are held between two sailing yachts: one from the yacht club that currently holds the trophy and the other from the yacht club that is challenging for the cup.

A lot has changed in the 173 years that the race was first run.? The first race in 1851 when the schooner ‘America’ crossed the Atlantic from New York to challenging the best of the British fleet in speed trials, the vessel stood as a representation of American yachting ingenuity. The ‘America’ was a sensation, winning a race around the Isle of Wight in the Royal Yacht Squadron’s Annual Regatta on 22nd August for what was then known as the ￡100 Cup.? In the same spirt of ingenuity, the technology of the current racing yachts is state-of-the-art.? The AC75 monohull is a racking yacht that uses wing-like sailing hydrofoils mounted under the hull, a soft wingsail, and no keel.? Thes yachts have reached speeds beyond 50 knots (93?km/h; 58?mph).

So how is an automation company that manufactures gearboxes involved with yacht racing?? These yachts, being the engineering marvels that they are, use automation!? The hydrofoils mounted under the hull are actuated by a hydraulic control system.? The rules for the race require the yacht only be driven by wind and controlled by the sailors.? The hydraulic system, therefore, has no motor to create pressure.? The hydraulic pressure is created by manpower.? Each yacht employs what is know as cyclors to pedal pumps that create the pressure necessary to actuate the foils.

And here is where the servo planetary gearbox comes into the picture.? Being highly efficient, with high torque capability and having a compact construction, the planetary gearbox fits nicely between the cyclor and the pump, leveraging the cyclor’s work to meet the yacht’s needs.? The AES gearbox features full stainless construction for corrosion resistance, spring loaded shaft seals with patented design at the input and output for up to IP67 ingress protection, fully sealed construction via o-ring seals between mating housings and is available with a variety of grease options.? It is normally employed in food grade, washdown and hygienic applications, which translates very well to the sailing environment.

The America’s Cup is underway now, with the preliminary regatta complete and the Louis Vitton Cup set to begin on the 29th of August, and continues through the 7th of October, where the teams will be competing to earn the right to challenge the current Cup holder (defender), Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, for the America’s Cup.?
