APAC News

We reported on a number of updates from the Asia Pacific region this week, with many of the new activities taking place in South Korea where multiple developers have signed Transmission Service Agreements (TSAs) for their offshore wind projects. You can catch up with the news from APAC in our recap today.

Mingyang Gets FEED Contract for 2.8 GW Italian Floater

Italian developer Renexia has contracted China’s Mingyang Smart Energy for the front-end engineering design (FEED) of the 2.8 GW Med Wind floating offshore wind project in Italy.

The contract follows the joint signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Italian Ministry of Enterprises to develop a factory in Italy for the new 18 MW MySE turbines.

The FEED contract is said to mark another key milestone in the development of the Med Wind floating offshore wind project, which the new Mingyang turbines will power.

The wind farm will feature 18.8 MW units (MySE 18-292), for which integrated load analysis has already begun and the prototype is already operational.

South Korean Floating Wind Project Inks Transmission Agreement with KEPCO

The 1,125 MW MunmuBaram floating offshore wind farm, being developed by Hexicon and Shell in South Korea, has entered into a Transmission Service Agreement (TSA) with Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO).

MunmuBaram is collaborating with two other developers on the grid connection facilities. These facilities are said to enable the efficient transfer of clean energy from each wind farm to the mainland, ensuring a stable and reliable power supply.

The grid connection from the MunmuBaram offshore wind farm to KEPCO’s substations is scheduled to commence in March 2029, following the construction of the joint grid connection facility.

KF Wind Secures Grid Deal for 1.1 GW Floating Offshore Wind Project

Korea Floating Wind (KF Wind), a floating offshore wind project being developed by Ocean Winds and Mainstream Renewable Power, has secured a Transmission Service Agreement (TSA) with Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO).

The agreement covers the first phase of the project, East Blue Power (375 MW), and the second phase, KF Wind (750 MW), with the interconnection point for the project at KEPCO’s Shinonsan onshore station in Ulsan, South Korea.

Grid interconnection will enable the efficient transmission of the renewable energy generated by the KF Wind floating wind project of around 1,125 MW of installed capacity to the mainland.

Three More Floating Offshore Wind Projects in South Korea Secure Grid Connection

Three floating offshore wind projects, being developed off the coast of Ulsan, South Korea, have entered into a Transmission Service Agreement (TSA) with Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO).

The floating offshore wind projects that signed the TSA are Gray Whale (BadaEnergy), Haewoori (Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners), and Bandibuli (Equinor).

Together with the 1,125 MW MunmuBaram and the 1,125 MW Korea Floating Wind (KF Wind) projects that also secured TSAs, the agreements between the five developers and KEPCO ensure the connection of a total of 6 GW of clean power to the national grid.

MEO Group and Taihan Cable & Solution Sign Offshore Wind MoU

Myclin Express Offshore (MEO Group) and South Korea’s Taihan Cable & Solution have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate on offshore wind projects.

Together, MEO Group and Taihan plan to foster collaboration on offshore wind projects, especially in South Korea, with the deployment of the Group’s vessels and Taihan’s cable-laying vessels (CLVs).

Based in Singapore, MEO Group runs 14 overseas branches and focuses on providing marine solutions, with a fleet of around 120 vessels, including ones used for offshore wind project support.

When it comes to Taihan Cable & Solution, the company opened the first phase of its submarine cable plant that will supply the offshore wind industry in June this year.

The submarine cable plant, covering around 44,800 square metres behind Godae Pier at Pyeongtaek’s Dangjin Port, is being constructed in two phases. The first phase, which focuses on producing inter-array cables, was finalized and approved in May.

The second phase, which includes facilities for the production of export cables, is currently under construction with plans for completion by the first half of 2025.

Fugro to Gather Metocean Data for ?rsted’s Australian Offshore Wind Farms

?rsted has selected the Dutch geo-data specialist Fugro to carry out a floating LiDAR measurement campaign for its Gippsland offshore wind farms in Australia.

For twelve months, Fugro’s SEAWATCH Wind LiDAR Buoy will measure wind, wave, current, and meteorological parameters to help assess the viability of ?rsted’s wind farms located off Gippsland in Australia’s state of Victoria.

Metocean data will be transferred in real-time to give the client early insight into site conditions, followed by monthly reports.

BlueFloat Bolsters Taiwan Floating Offshore Wind Ties

BlueFloat Energy has signed agreements with the Ship and Ocean Industries R&D Center (SOIC) and the CR Classification Society to advance development in Taiwan’s floating offshore wind sector. Additionally, the company formalized a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with National Taiwan University’s Ocean Center for a study on its Winds of September project.

BlueFloat said these agreements focus on designing and analyzing floating offshore wind systems tailored to Taiwan’s unique environmental conditions.

Building on the initial collaboration launched last year, BlueFloat Energy and SOIC further deepened their partnership by signing an agreement on “Design and Analysis of Floating Offshore Wind System for Specific Taiwanese Environments“, involving also CR.

The agreement aims to address the challenges posed by Taiwan’s marine environment and regulatory framework by conducting studies on the region’s geography, climate, and specific requirements for floating offshore wind.

Cyan Renewables, Blue Water Shipping Forge APAC Offshore Wind Alliance

Singapore-headquartered Cyan Renewables and Blue Water Shipping have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on providing a wide range of logistical services for the offshore wind sector in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region.

Under the MoU, the partners agree to provide a wide range of logistical services and infrastructure to facilitate the transportation of offshore wind components via the ocean/road, route survey, port marshalling yard, and more.

According to the companies, the consortium will leverage their combined expertise and resources to foster the development of comprehensive logistical solutions and seek opportunities to establish marshalling ports for the offshore wind industry in the APAC region.
