"Anyone wishing to amass more than $ 500,000 has to go to a psychiatrist"?
Amedeo Giannini

"Anyone wishing to amass more than $ 500,000 has to go to a psychiatrist"

The man who said these words was called Amedeo Pietro Giannini. A man who, starting from poverty, managed to create the largest financial empire of his time.

This is a quick recap of his life and achievements of him:

  • Born in 1860 in San Jose, the son of very poor Italian immigrants. Orphaned by his father at the age of 7, at 12 he began working at night as a porter for a vegetable wholesaler, at 19 he became a partner, and within a few years the warehouse became one of the largest in San Francisco.
  • At 31 he enters the board of directors of a local bank but what he sees does not like loans are made to those who already have the money and have no difficulty in repaying it, while all around thousands of immigrants, who want to make a fortune and have they need someone to trust them, they are forced to go to the usurers, and pay the banks a rate of 6% to send money to Italy. He resigned from the bank, and with $ 150,000 borrowed from his stepfather and another hundred from a dozen friends, in 1904 he opened in a former Bank of Italy saloon. Clients go to look for them among Italian immigrants and from all countries. To transfer the money to the family in his homeland, he only asks for 3%. In a couple of years he wins the trust of the entire working population and deposits exceed a million dollars.
  • In the 20's he finances the film industry, and believes in Charlie Chaplin when no one gave him the money to produce what became an international hit: "The Kid". Chaplin asked him for $ 14,000, Giannini gives him $ 50,000 and asks for 25% of the proceeds in exchange.
  • The big move comes in 1930, when he merges Bank of Italy with Bank of America, a small bank in New York. Against him the entire banking establishment, which has been hindering him for some time and belittling him by calling him "the Italian greengrocer". His business expands and the great bankers, envious of his successes, continue for years to wage a merciless war on him, up to accusing him of falsifying accounts.
  • During the Great Depression of the 1930s, while many banks fail because they invested in stocks that have depreciated and no longer have assets, Bank of America is not affected because it finances the real economy. In addition to small loans to ordinary people, Giannini also accepts riskier customers who want to invest in the vineyards, thus helping the wine industry to develop. When Walt Disney goes over the budget for the filming of Snow White, Giannini approves a loan of $ 1.7 million.
  • In 1932, Joseph Strass, designer of the Golden Gate, who has not been able to find a financier for 14 years, turned to him. What convinces Amadeo is the certainty that the bridge would help the population of San Francisco to get out of the climate of economic depression that hovers over the city, and requires Bank of America not to receive any interest on the 6 million loan.

Giannini died in 1949 at the age of 79. Bank of America has grown into the largest bank in the world, with assets of $ 7 billion and 526 branches in more than 300 US cities. Upon his death, the New York Times writes: "A careful inventory of his assets has determined that they amount to $ 489,278, a small sum for a man of his stature and his success."

Giannini's lesson is still valid today.

Is there a human and moral limit to the amount of money a person can make?

Is it still possible to combine one's wealth with that of the society around us?

And finally why I think that this man sounds so Web3?

Thoughts?

Interesting small biography of Giannini. It fascinates me that he was caring more about helping and financing others, than just amassing more and more wealth for himself. It is easy to be consumed by greediness and this man has done something outstanding! He resisted - as it seems - the urge to acquire immense wealth. Amazing!
