■ Asked casually: "How's the relaunch going?" The short answer: "Really well." We meet Jaguar boss Rawdon Glover on the sidelines of a preliminary presentation of the new Type 00 concept car at the headquarters in Gaydon, UK. They are proud to finally present the results of months of work to the public.
■ We naturally wonder why Jaguar decided not to dare to make an obvious reminiscence of its iconic models as part of the brand reinvention. We then learn that with the switch to purely electric cars, they have to go a different way.
■ Dramatic proportions
"Electric cars don't yet generate the same emotion or desire as an impressive combustion engine can. Many electric cars look quite similar. They have narrow wheels, are aerodynamically optimised, are built quite high because of the batteries and have short front hoods," says Glover. "We're going a different way. We're bringing a car to market with dramatic proportions. It has a huge hood, very low wheels, and enormous wheels. This gives our electric car a presence on the road. In the early stages, a participant in a focus group told us 'Whoever is behind the wheel should be wearing a cape'. That's it."
However, we want to recognize that other manufacturers in the upper segment already offer impressive electric cars. What exactly does Jaguar wish to do to stand out?
■ We're going our own way
"Well, all OEMs have their strategies, and I respect that. But our founder, Sir William Lyons, rightly said that a Jaguar is only good if it doesn't copy anything. And even if the trend seems to be pointing clearly in one direction, you can feel destined to go a different way. If you decide to go that way, you must do it with conviction - and that's what we're doing."
