Are there any writing groups I can join?
Day 29 of 30 Bestselling Book Tips for Writing Your Life Story
I’ve been a member of writing groups for as long as I can remember. From intimate kitchen-table gatherings to large online conference calls, being part of writing community has always been important to me.? I found these communities in various ways such as word-of-mouth, social media, Eventbrite, meetup groups and so on.? For several years I participated in Lip Service in Miami, Relax and Write in Los Angeles, and The Moth in many cities. These groups helped me become a better writer and gave me life-long friendships with other storytellers.
For the past few years, I have also been hosting my own groups – in person and online.? My current offer includes private writing retreats in West Palm Beach Florida and weekly zoom calls called Writers Unite.? When I launched my writing retreats and writing coaching last summer, I had no idea who would show up. I wasn’t even sure if anyone would join. But one by one, I received inquiries and then bookings, and now, I've witnessed incredible transformations. By the end of 2024, two of my ten clients will publish books! Others are launching blogs and publishing articles. I couldn’t be prouder.
Witnessing these transformations has been incredibly fulfilling and has reaffirmed my belief in the power of community and shared goals. In my group, I emphasize the importance of mutual support, constructive feedback, and a safe space where writers can freely express their creativity. The camaraderie that develops among the writers is something truly special; they not only improve their craft but also gain a network of friends who celebrate their successes and help them navigate challenges. This supportive environment has proven to be a catalyst for growth and innovation among the participants.

Sharing our life stories with a group of trusted people is profoundly healing because it allows us to process and make sense of our experiences. In a supportive community, we feel validated and understood, which gives us the courage to share our stories with a wider audience. The encouragement and feedback from fellow writers help us refine our voice and build confidence. Writing as Medicine is deeply rooted in community; it is through these shared experiences and mutual support that we find the strength to be vulnerable and authentic, ultimately transforming our personal healing into a source of inspiration for others.
