Any Port In A Storm?
NTP (Network Time Protocol) has been with the security industry for 20 years and back then we as an industry didn't know about cyber crime, and it wasn't even on the radar... Fast forward to today and the UK alone has 120,000 attacks a day.
The industry then specifies the best cabling, servers, VMS, storage for the system then locks all the empty ports down... Oh no, wait a minute.... leave ONE port open because we have to have a synchronised time for the network, cameras and the access system to show the correct time.... This clearly leaves a valuable port open for the cyber criminal.
Some organisations even use their Windows work stations for time synchronisation.
“The W32Time service is not a full-featured NTP solution that meets time-sensitive application needs and is not supported by Microsoft as such. For more information, see Microsoft Knowledge Base article 939322”.
We at Veracity now introduce our enhanced TIMENET Pro. This is an NTP GPS Master Time Server. Once installed it ensures that your network and all the devices on them keep the same time. There is a separate configuration page for passwords and administration duties.

8 年And once you have got your Veracity TIMENET Pro as a high quality NTP time source, you need to design your time hierarchy for your network, and ensure that the rest of the network uses proper NTP to achieve clock synchronisation rather than time synchronisation. KB939322 still shocks me.

8 年Though, of course, GPS can be hacked, if only to disrupt the time on your time sensitive data......................
nice piece Geoff.
