Anxiety in the Workplace: Navigating Corporate Waters with Clarity
It was a crisp morning as I stood in front of a group of eager first-year management students. Their faces held a blend of excitement and apprehension, much like I had felt when I first ventured into the corporate world three decades ago.
I was invited to conduct a session on anxiety, a topic that has increasingly found its way into boardrooms and cubicles. Little did I know that this interaction would trigger a cascade of thoughts about anxiety within my own profession.
The very same week, in the virtual realm, I found myself in an online session with an organisation called Ear to Hear, where I serve as a counsellor. This time, the focus was on cognitive distortions – those twisted patterns of thinking that can turn molehills into mountains of worry. It struck me how these distortions, often born in the workplace, can have a profound impact on our mental well-being.
These two experiences served as a catalyst. I realized that anxiety is not confined to the textbooks or therapy rooms; it permeates the very fabric of the corporate world, affecting executives, managers, and employees alike. Not long ago, I found myself facing a client straight out of a nightmare. Demanding, rude, and relentless, this person seemed determined to test our limits. Anxiety became my constant companion. But, with the support of my superiors, I realized that the power to manage this anxiety lay within my grasp.
So today, let’s embark on a journey through my own experiences and reflections, as I share strategies and insights for managing anxiety in the workplace. You won’t find a list of do’s and don’ts here; instead, I’ll weave in stories and realizations, drawn from both my corporate endeavors and my counseling practice. Consider this a personal conversation, as we navigate the often choppy waters of corporate life while maintaining our mental compass.
Breaking Down the Monolith
One strategy that's been a lifesaver is breaking down colossal challenges into smaller, manageable pieces. It's like turning a mountain into a series of hills. Suddenly, the insurmountable becomes achievable, and anxiety loses its grip.
Circles of Influence and Concern
Before we delve into this particular strategy, let’s explore what the “circle of influence” and the “circle of concern” entail.
Circle of Influence: This circle represents the aspects of our work and life that we have direct control over. It’s where our actions, decisions, and efforts can create meaningful change. Your ability to meet project deadlines, improve your skills, and maintain a positive attitude falls within your circle of influence. These are areas where your actions directly impact outcomes.
Circle of Concern: In contrast, the circle of concern includes things we care about but often cannot control directly. Factors like market fluctuations, the decisions of upper management, or the behavior of a difficult colleague often belong to your circle of concern. You might be concerned about these, but you have limited control over them.
It is very important to recognising what's within my circle of influence and focusing my energy there. Anxiety often stems from fretting over things outside my control. Shifting my focus to what I can influence has been liberating.
The Power of Mindfulness
Mindfulness, the third pillar of my anxiety management, is all about staying rooted in the present moment. Amidst the corporate chaos, it's easy to get lost in the future or past. But by practicing mindfulness, I've learned to appreciate the here and now, finding solace in the present.

Colleagues Battling Anxiety
Over the years, I've witnessed colleagues grappling with anxiety's formidable grip. Sleepless nights, loss of appetite, and constant worry became their companions. Anxiety didn't discriminate; it affected both their professional and personal lives.
Silenced Voices and Missed Opportunities
One colleague stands out, a brilliant mind who shied away from promotions because of crippling anxiety in front of high-ranking clients. Another hid remarkable ideas out of fear of ridicule. Workplace culture and leadership played pivotal roles in these stories.
Culture's Impact on Anxiety
Let’s not overlook the crucial role workplace culture and leadership play in the anxiety equation. In my extensive corporate journey, I’ve seen both ends of the spectrum.
There are companies where anxiety thrives, where mistakes are met with punitive actions and admitting vulnerability is seen as a sign of weakness. In such environments, anxiety can fester, taking a toll on employees’ physical and mental health. I recall a supervisor who, during an unwarranted restructuring, sat two close-knit subordinates face to face, asking each to justify why they shouldn’t be laid off in favor of the other. The tension and anxiety in that room were palpable.
But then, there are organizations that foster empathy, understanding, and resilience. In these spaces, anxiety can find solace. I’ve witnessed the transformative power of leaders who extend a compassionate hand to employees navigating turbulent times. It’s a simple act of reassurance that new mistakes are tolerated if made in the pursuit of challenging goals.
The Power of Support and Coaching
Throughout my corporate voyage, I’ve discovered the immense power of support and coaching. It’s easy to underestimate the value of a mentor or coach who can guide you through turbulent times. Their insights and experience can help you see beyond immediate challenges and find clarity amid chaos.
A Changing Landscape
Over these three decades, I've seen remarkable progress. Companies now prioritise mental health, offering support and guidance to employees. The stigma surrounding anxiety is diminishing, and we're moving toward a more understanding corporate world.
In Conclusion
In the corporate maze, anxiety is a formidable adversary. But as I've learned, it's a battle that can be won. By breaking down challenges, focusing on our circle of influence, practicing mindfulness, and fostering empathetic workplaces, we can navigate the corporate landscape with resilience and grace.
