Recently, I conducted a LinkedIn and in-person survey to uncover the most pressing health and wellness concerns among professionals. The results were eye-opening: most respondents identified stress and anxiety as their main areas of concern. These findings underscore a common struggle among professionals today—stress and anxiety are at the forefront of our challenges. But what exactly is stress, and why does it seem to have such a strong grip on us?
Title: Understanding Stress & Anxiety in the Workplace and Life?
What is Stress??
When someone says they’re stressed, it usually means they’re overwhelmed by the demands of their job, personal life, or both. Stress can stem from tight deadlines, heavy workloads, relationship issues, or juggling too many responsibilities. It often feels like you’re under constant pressure, making you anxious, tired, or irritable. In essence, stress is a state of mental and emotional strain that impacts how you feel and function daily.
Stress is our body's natural response to perceived threats, a mechanism designed for survival. In prehistoric times, it activated our sympathetic nervous system, preparing us to fight or flee from danger. However, in today’s urban society, where life-threatening dangers are rare, our bodies still react as if they’re under constant threat, even when faced with challenges like deadlines or financial worries.
The Root Cause of Stress?
The core issue lies in our overactive sympathetic nervous system—the part responsible for the "fight or flight" response. Without real life-threatening dangers, our minds misinterpret everyday challenges as threats. This prolonged activation releases stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, providing quick bursts of energy and alertness.
Initially, these bursts might seem helpful, pushing us through busy days or challenging projects. But over time, our brains begin to crave this heightened state of alertness, leading to a cycle where stress becomes our default mode of operation.
Why Stress is Harmful?
Our "fight or flight" response was meant to protect us from immediate threats, allowing us to seek shelter and then return to normal life. This response involves complex bodily mechanisms that regulate our metabolism and inner workings. However, when we remain in this heightened state, the organs involved become overworked, leading to problems with the kidneys, heart, pancreas, and thyroid—issues often linked to chronic stress.
Why We Struggle to Break the Cycle?
The longer we stay in this stress-driven state, the harder it becomes to turn it off. Our ability to control this anxious, hormone-fueled state diminishes, leading to chronic stress. This ongoing stress affects our mental and physical well-being, resulting in headaches, fatigue, and weakened immunity. We essentially become addicted to stress hormones, creating mental scenarios to remain in that high-alert state.
Breaking the Cycle
Understanding the root cause of stress is crucial for breaking the cycle that keeps us trapped in a state of constant tension. Stress is not just a reaction to external pressures; it’s a complex interplay of our thoughts, emotions, and physiological responses. By identifying the underlying triggers and learning how our minds and bodies react, we can begin to dismantle the patterns that perpetuate stress.
