Anxiety – Don’t let it rule your life, take action now !

Anxiety is a silent disabler. Most of us will suffer at some stage in our lives. However, very few of us will seek help.

This blog will give you some simple techniques to help prevent and manage Anxiety.

Anxiety is an emotion, not an illness. But, it is a false emotion. It is driven by the thoughts and feeling towards a situation, that may or may not happen.

Nobody ever died of anxiety. It may feel life threatening, but the symptoms are just that, symptoms. They are not an illness. Your heart may be beating fast and you may be feeling faint and breathless. But this is just an Anxiety attack ! not a heart attack.

Anxiety is a ‘fight or flight’ response to an impending situation. This may be a real or an imagined event. Some people have yet to discover what is causing their anxiety. If you fall into this category, it could be that you are having a physical response to a physical stress.

Just as cars need servicing and maintenance, so do our bodies. Treat your body well and it will function well.

Some simple steps to manage anxiety

# 1. Check your air and water levels.

We can only survive for 3 minutes without oxygen and 3 days without water, yet we can live for 3 weeks without food.

Regular deep breaths and sipping water throughout the day will help maintain body functionality. This will prevent symptoms of physical anxiety.

#2. Talk to a friend and set up a buddy system.

Having someone to call when you are feeling panicky is a lifeline. Sometimes it is all we need. A good friend who can remind us that we are safe, brings reality home to us.

#3. Seek professional help for issues that are troubling you.

Sometimes getting professional advice and guidance from someone who understands is the best solution. To have a negative thought run repeatedly is very disabling. Getting help to put these into perspective can be incredibly powerful.

#4. Learn to meditate and control your mind.

Many people have found that meditation is a huge help in controlling the chatter that goes on in their minds throughout the day. Joining a local meditation group can be a great way to find support and structure a regular routine.

#5. Eat well and nurture yourself.

Put yourself first and feel a sense of empowerment. Remembering, you are captain of your ship and you are in control. This is an important way to look after your health and wellbeing.

#6. Keep a diary and critique it.

Write down your thoughts and feelings. Take time to read back with a critical eye. When you read things that are negative, ask yourself ‘ is this true?’ What evidence is there to support this?

We are too quick to believe negative things that we think and feel.

#7. Make an effort to notice good things.

Making time for good thoughts and feelings is very important. These positive feelings fuel our productivity and energise usTake time to write down good thoughts, feelings and memories and put them in a jar to read on a rainy day.

#8. Talk back to chatter.

Finally, don’t just accept and listen to the needy and naive  voice of your subconscious. Your conscious mind is educated and is in control of your life. Tell your uneducated, needy chatter to be quiet. Take control, educate yourself and refuse to accept any more negativity.
