Ants in the Drain

After 12 long years of trying, I finally embarked on my Vipassana journey—a path that had always seemed just out of reach. Every time I made plans to go, something urgent would come up at the last minute, forcing me to cancel. But last month, everything aligned, and I finally found myself on the journey I had longed for.
Vipassana is no walk in the park. You sit in complete silence for hours, not just silencing your voice but quieting the chaos of your mind and body. That stillness? It creates space—a space where internal conversations, often uncomfortable, begin to surface. Yet, it’s in this stillness that you start noticing life outside of yourself more acutely.
One evening, as I was bathing, I noticed two large black ants in the water. They were caught in the flow, helplessly being pushed towards the drain. The first one, despite a brief struggle, quickly disappeared into the drain’s darkness. But the second? It fought. Hard. It swam against the current, flailing with all its might, trying to claw its way to safety. I watched, frozen. The water was relentless, and despite its tireless efforts, it finally lost its grip and slid down onto the drain cover. My heart sank as I watched it disappear, just like the first one.
That night, I couldn’t shake the image of that ant battling for its life. Its struggle mirrored so many of our own—fighting forces we can’t fully understand, refusing to give in, even when the odds feel insurmountable. I felt an unexpected kinship with that tiny creature. It was like watching myself and others, battling unseen currents in our lives. I went to bed with a heavy heart, burdened by the thought of its defeat.
But the next morning, as I prepared for another day of meditation, I glanced at the drain. To my absolute amazement—and perhaps a touch of disbelief—the same ant was there. Somehow, after a night of battling forces larger than itself, it sat there, bedraggled but alive, on the drain cover. I felt an overwhelming surge of pride for that little warrior. Against all odds, it had survived. It had returned.

In that moment, something clicked deep within me. Life is exactly like that. We face torrents that threaten to pull us down into darkness, yet what defines us isn’t how many times we get caught in the current, but how fiercely we fight, how resilient we become. That ant wasn’t just a small insect struggling in a bath—it was a symbol of how, even in the face of overwhelming challenges, we can rise again. We can be knocked down, slide toward darkness, but with resilience and grit, we find our way back, bedraggled maybe, but triumphant.
Isn’t that the essence of change within us? Life’s struggles, like that of the ant, aren’t meant to defeat us but to shape us, teach us to rise stronger. No matter how dark it gets, there is always light waiting for those who refuse to give up.
