ANTIMICROBIAL STEWARDSHIP PROGRAMS TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF CARE IN ICU PATIENTS
In a scenario where antibiotic resistance is on the rise, it is essential to use antibiotics as effectively as possible. According to study findings, between 30 and 60 percent of the antibiotics provided in intensive care units are not essential, suitable, or of the highest quality.
Antibiotic overuse and improper use are unquestionably contributing to the growing problems caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria, and epidemiological studies have amply shown causal links between antibiotic use and the emergence and spread of resistant strains in hospitals and intensive care units.
The study involved 150 patients in total, 50 for each month. The study comprised patients who were at least 18 years old, admitted to the pertinent ICUs, and started empirical antibiotics for sepsis/septic shock or VAP.
In periods 1, 2, and 3, respectively, it took an average of 179 minutes (IQR: 359 minutes), 205 minutes (IQR: 334 minutes), and 206 minutes (IQR: 342 minutes) before the first dosage of antibiotic was given (p = 0.502).
The use of ASPs in facilities where the majority of the control over the antimicrobial management of ICU patients is exercised by infectious diseases specialists is still a viable method for enhancing patient care.

2 年We need not always go to the ICU. Even in the wards the situation is haywire.Let’s take an example - Female patient, Age -55 years , Diabetic, hypertensive - presents to the OPD with signs & symptoms of UTI, treated earlier with fluroquinolones . The Physician admits the patient and puts on PIP-TAZ. Now my take on the above case- Age 55 - Chance of ESBL involvement. Diabetes & Hypertension- Chance of ESBL involvement. Recurrent UTI - Chance of ESBL involvement. More than 80% UTI are caused by E-Coli. So, is PIP TAZO a good choice? Moreover since PIP TAZO has a good anti pseudomonal activity, is it not prudent to preserve it & not increase the the selection pressure on Pseudomonas by using it in an E-coli infection. Questions are many .Microbiology department can be a pivot in changing the sensitivity pattern of a hospital . Awareness is the way forward. Congratulate Concord on the initiative.
