SGS Certification Solutions
Enabling risk mitigation and operational efficiency with management systems standards
We outline the anticipated updates to world renowned management system standards ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001.
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO), along with representatives from nominated bodies like SGS, is progressing with revisions to its key management standards: ISO 9001 (Quality Management), ISO 14001 (Environmental Management) and ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety Management). These updates aim to align the standards with evolving industry practices, technological advancements and global challenges.
We want to ensure that you are aware of the timelines, as we know them now, but are subject to change.
ISO 9001 quality management system standard
It is too early yet to share definitive anticipated changes as consensus needs to be reached. Discussions to date have featured enhanced focus on risk management, resilience and opportunities, integration of digital transformation considerations and greater emphasis on sustainability and supply chain management.
ISO 14001 environmental management system standard
Adaptation to text and requirements in the latest version of ISO's Harmonized Structure (HS) for management system standards
Amended text to provide for better understanding of existing requirements by rephrasing current requirements or inclusion of notes
Clarifications of requirements by enhancing the guidance in Annex A for some identified key topics
As always, there may be changes following the stakeholder hearing of the draft update version. But in short, what is revealed means quite moderate changes for companies. The changes are far from the extent of changes that was experienced for users for the 2015 edition.
ISO 45001 occupational health and safety management system standard
It has just been confirmed that the revision of ISO 45001 is approved and is progressing into the planning phase. It is expected that the reviewed version of the standard is likely to be published in 2027.
