Anticipated ISO 9001 2025/26 update
ISO 9001 2025/26 will aim to make the international standard more relevant and effective in today's business environment. Key benefits are likely to include improved risk management, better integration of digital tools, enhanced focus on sustainability, more effective supply chain management, and stronger engagement of employees –
Improved Risk Management
Building on the risk-based thinking introduced in 2015, the new update will likely provide more detailed guidelines on how to formalize risk management processes. This will help businesses identify, assess, and mitigate risks more effectively, aligning quality management with organisational resilience.
?
Integration of emerging technologies
To keep pace with the rapid increase in digitization and the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in automated decision marking. In today’s digital age, organisations are increasingly reliant on automation, data analytics, and other digital technologies. The new revision is expected to encourage businesses to embrace digital tools to enhance quality management processes, making operations more efficient and data-driven.
?
Enhanced Focus on Sustainability
As environmental concerns take centre stage, the new ISO 9001 update will likely place greater emphasis on sustainability, encouraging businesses to incorporate environmental considerations into their quality objectives. This could mean better alignment with ISO 14001 (environmental management) and other sustainability frameworks.
?
Renewed focus
On Quality Assurance and further clarifications that the Quality Management System is an integral part of the business processes.

More Effective Supply Chain Management
Global supply chain disruptions have highlighted the need for more robust, resilient supply chain processes. The updated standard is expected to include stronger guidance on managing supply chains, ensuring that quality is maintained even in the face of external challenges. Clarifications for service providers and strengthening service requirements (some even suggest a separate standard for services).
?
Stronger Employee Engagement
A growing body of research highlights the critical role that employees play in maintaining and improving quality and their Ethical Behaviour. The new revision may include more specific requirements related to employee engagement, training, and well-being, fostering a people-centred approach to quality management.

2 个月ISO 9001 standard should serve as a framework for developing a sustainable business management system rather than a quality management system. To change organisational culture towards being process-oriented and risk-based, we must revise our terminology and avoid labeling business processes solely as quality management processes. This perspective tends to create two systems within an organisation. In reality, the organisation itself is a cohesive system comprised of various business processes, which we commonly refer to as functional areas in our everyday discussion.

2 个月Until the standard and CB’s do something to make it harder for companies to pay lip service to the standards and eliminate a tick box cultural. ISO 9001 and other standards will not always be worth the paper it’s written on. I know people say the lip service to meet the standards requirements only applies to a minority but I disagree.

2 个月Very interested to see the details of these concepts and how they will fit in the framework of ISO clauses. Is stating that a company "should have a QMS that considers risk management" enough context for a supplier to develop a risk management system that will pass an audit? While I understand passing an audit is not supposed to be the end goal of ISO 9001, the reality for a lot of organizations is that if they cannot pass the audit then they cannot sell product to customers (no bid lists, etc.). I hope the standard will provide more guidance than just saying you need to do it and not leave it to the interpretation of the certification bodies and, in some cases, individual auditors.
It is interesting where David have received such optimistic and misleading information about the document which is not developed yet and will potentially be another ISO failure!?
