As a practice we are very careful with our use of antibiotics, we do not advocate prophylactic use of antibiotics and do our absolute best to reduce antibiotic resistance.
Our routine surgical cases (including TPLO, Total Hip Replacement & clean fracture repairs) do not receive routine post-operative antibiotics, only intravenous peri-operative antibiotics are administered.
This has been the case now for many years.
We follow stringent hygiene and patient preparation protocols along with undertaking regular practice hygiene screens using an external laboratory (tag Nationwide Laboratories) to avoid unnecessary antibiotic usage post-operatively.
Our clients receive post-operative management instructions to reduce patient self-trauma, thus reducing infections post operatively.
We would encourage any referring vets to contact us prior to dispensing antibiotics for patients post-operatively. Most cases of swelling/seromas are due to patient over activity rather than infection.
