Anthropic Announces $3.5 B in New Funding
Anthropic , creator of Claude, has announced a $3.5 billion funding round at a post-money valuation of $61.5 billion. The investment was led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, which contributed $1 billion, alongside additional funds from Bessemer Venture Partners , Cisco Investments , D1 Capital Partners L.P. , 富达 , General Catalyst , Jane Street , Menlo Ventures , and Salesforce Ventures , among others.
This announcement confirms rumors that circulated in early January when Reuters reported Anthropic was nearing a deal to raise an additional $2 billion at a $60 billion valuation. The final deal exceeded those projections, demonstrating strong investor confidence. The company is growing at a blistering pace. According to the Reuters report from January, Anthropic's annualized revenue had reached approximately $875 million at the time. Bloomberg and CNBC's reporting suggests the annualized number was closer to $1 billion at the end of the year and may be as much as 30% higher now.
The new funding round builds upon significant investments from major tech companies. Anthropic announced a $4 billion investment from Amazon in November 2024, which brought Amazon's total investment in Anthropic to $8 billion. As part of that expanded partnership, AWS became Anthropic's primary cloud and training partner, while maintaining a minority investor position. The collaboration includes work on AWS Trainium hardware and software, with Anthropic contributing to the optimization of specialized machine learning hardware and the AWS Neuron software stack.
Simultaneously, Google has deepened its commitment to Anthropic with a fresh investment of more than $1 billion, as reported by the Financial Times in late January. This latest investment builds on Google's previous commitment of about $2 billion to the AI startup. The Alphabet-owned search giant's continued investment in Anthropic reflects its strategy to diversify its AI business and strengthen its position against technology rivals Microsoft, Meta, and Amazon as they vie for leadership in AI development and commercialization.
The company plans to use this new capital to advance its development of next-generation AI systems, expand its compute capacity, deepen research in mechanistic interpretability and alignment, and accelerate international expansion in Asia and Europe.
Anthropic has seen significant adoption across industries. Notable implementations include Replit 's integration of Claude into "Agent" to convert natural language into code, driving 10X revenue growth; 汤森路透 ' tax platform CoCounsel using Claude to assist tax professionals; and 诺和诺德 's implementation of Claude to reduce clinical study report writing from 12 weeks to just 10 minutes. Additionally, Claude now helps power Amazon's Alexa+, bringing advanced AI capabilities to millions of households.
Last week the company launched Claude 3.7 Sonnet and Claude Code, setting new benchmarks in coding abilities – an area where Anthropic plans to make further progress in the coming months. Claude 3.7 Sonnet has generally received rave reviews from users. I've had a great experience in my interactions as well.
Anthropic rival OpenAI is reportedly in talks to raise up to $40 billion at a $300 billion post-money valuation. All of the frontier model companies continue to face increasing pressure from smaller players like DeepSeek AI , which demonstrated the ability to train frontier-level models at a fraction of the cost relative to American and European rivals.
