What's New This Week?
Let the tests begin!
We’ve already spoken about “The Merge”, whereby it’s expected the Ethereum network will transition from “Proof-of-Work” (Pow) to “Proof-of-Stake” (PoS), which are different consensus mechanisms.
It’s expected that this will make the mainet more attractive to investors, in particular as it will bring attractive staking yields, it will be easier to grasp from financial perspective, Ether will become a deflationary asset (with the burn being higher than token inflation) and it will become a more environmentally friendly protocol (“bye bye miners”). This all sounds great, but it’s such a major transition that it’s necessary to carefully plan ahead and understand the real impact to ensure a successful go-live. This, of course, if it does get implemented on the mainnet.
For this reason, last Wednesday was stage to the Ethereum “Ropsten Testnet”, a successful attempt to merge a PoW layer with the Beacon Chain PoS consensus chain. In effect, this is the same process that the mainnet would have to go through. Under this paralel chain, validators are already creating and validating transactions (i.e. new blocks) and this is happening while the mainnet is still operating with the standard consensus mechanism.
Like any experiment, the results from this simulation will inform the work of the Ethereum developers responsible for “The Merge”. After all, the implications of this network upgrade for crypto are enormous, but the implementation risks are just as high - starting with the persistent technical challenges. Secondly, this change comes at the cost: miners would have to drop their (profitable) mining activity in favor of a PoS hard fork that involves staking Ether to validate transactions (with the underlying risk of the collateral losing value).
Stay tuned for the next two tesnet simulations, namely “Goerli” and “Seoplia”. This will be key to ensuring the success of “The Merge” that could happen before Q4. Anyway, the markets still don’t seem to have priced-in the potential upside resulting from a successful transition to PoS, namely the impact it will have in the Ethereum fundamentals.
