The Anthem of Leadership

The Anthem of Leadership

Hello everyone,

First off, a big thank you to everyone who reached out with birthday wishes! Sharing my birthday with Labor Day always feels special. It is a day when flags are visible everywhere, and hard work and dedication are celebrated. Today, I want to explore something that’s been on my mind since the Olympic Games concluded a few weeks ago. The connection between national anthems and leadership. It’s an unusual take but hang with me.?

Think about the last time you attended a sports event or a state fair show in your state. The moment the national anthem plays, everyone stands, united in that brief, powerful pause. It’s a ritual that reminds us of shared values and aspirations. But outside of those moments, have you ever thought about what anthems can teach us about leadership?

Consider this real-life scenario we are all familiar with: “team meetings.” We can all agree that they’re routine, lacking energy and inspiration most of the time. But what if we approached them like anthems? Instead of diving straight into agendas, start with a moment that unites and inspires. Share a story, a vision, or a success that everyone can rally around. Create that “anthem moment” to set the tone.

National anthems of any kind from any nation are more than words and music; they're bridges connecting past, present, and future. Similarly, leaders should connect all those and definitely connect people to a shared vision and a journey. Think of an anthem’s loudest point, which gives you goosebumps. Leaders must create those moments, too, for their teams.

Here’s an interesting twist: sometimes, the most powerful anthems face change or controversy. They adapt and evolve, much like influential leaders, with new creative ideas and processes. Flexibility and the ability to shift can transform a leader, a team, or an organization from good to great. Or in worst-case scenarios to worst.?

Take this example from a company I admire. During a massive industry shift, the new CEO didn’t stick to the old “anthem” of their usual strategies or book smart talks. Instead, she gathered input from the organization, from everyone, and developed a new vision resonating with them all. This wasn’t just about survival; it was about thriving in new landscapes. Her leadership became a new anthem, uniting and energizing the team.

There is what I call the invaluable art of listening, not just to what is said but to what remains unspoken. In the workplace, it’s easy to become consumed by the loudest voices. But we should remember that sometimes answers often reside in whispers. We must make it our mission to seek out those unheard voices. This is how we can unlock potential that goes beyond the ordinary.

Going back to those meetings, how about we embrace the silence and reflect on moments? We all have been there trying to schedule what’s usually considered a strategy meeting for the future. I'm sure if we try to replace those with quiet reflection and open-ended exploration of what could be done better in all aspects, the team may be unsure at first. Silence may make them uncomfortable, but soon, everyone should find themselves embracing the silence and identifying breakthroughs for the future.

As people working under the same roof or umbrella, we all have invisible threads connecting us. From the experience and feedback I consistently get, I believe empathy and shared purpose create stronger bonds than any contract. With that, we should find ways to transform those regular meetings into “Connection Circles” where everyone comes together to share personal stories and experiences. This should drive a powerful transformation. Colleagues who barely interacted before now collaborate seamlessly. Walls that once separated departments crumble, replaced by bridges of understanding and trust.

Most of the future ahead of us is unwritten. There is destiny, but we are the reasons for and the result of our efforts. We should emphasize that as the anthem tells a story, it’s up to each of us to write the future. The silence between the notes reminds us that our journey is ongoing, filled with possibilities yet to be explored.

So, the next time we hear a national anthem, we should think about its power to unify, inspire, and guide us in building our future. We should ask ourselves: How can we, as leaders, create an anthem for our teams? How can we connect, adapt, and inspire??

As we celebrate Labor Day and reflect on the value of hard work, let’s also remember the melodies that guide us. Whether you’re leading a team or simply leading by example, find your anthem and let it be the soundtrack of your leadership journey.

Thanks for reading, and again, I appreciate all the birthday love. Go out there, continue inspiring and finding your unique anthems!
