Ansys 2022 R2: taking a step toward material-led eco-design

On July 28, we release our bi-annual product update: Ansys 2022 R2. In this release the Ansys Materials team have built on the data, tools, and integrations to help engineers factor sustainability earlier in the design process. We’re also helping drive improved simulation accuracy for Ansys Mechanical users with the new Ansys Material Calibration application. With material data now exportable from any Ansys Granta product to any Ansys flagship solver and a supercharged version of Granta MI Pro, we’re making it easier to take that first step to Material Intelligence.??

Make More Sustainable Material Choices?

Around 80% of all product-related environmental impacts are determined by the design phase of a product. So, understanding the potential eco-impact of a material early in design is particularly important. Making changes later in design can lead to expensive retooling, supply chain, or regulatory impacts that fast moving companies can ill afford.??

By combining the latest Eco Data (based on ecoinvent v3.8), an upgraded Eco Audit tool, and integrating MI Gateway Icons that can display materials sustainability data (e.g., Recyclability - see image below) in simulation and CAD packages; engineers have the means of taking a more material-led approach to eco-design at the earliest stages of product development.??

For example, Granta Selector can be used to perform 'Streamlined' Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) using the Eco Audit tool – now also being able to use user-defined data. With 18,000+ Eco Data records across materials, chemicals, processes, and energy for different geographies, any engineer can now audit the relative sustainability of their material selection. Doing a Streamlined LCA saves companies time and cost and compliments a Full LCA. It acts as a means of ‘pre-screening’ a product’s eco-credentials, early in design, so when a Full LCA is performed, typically later in the product development stages, there are no surprises on what the environmental impact of a product will be.??

Drive Simulation Accuracy with Materials?

Ansys Mechanical users can build simulation-ready material models with the new Ansys Material Calibration application in Granta MI? Enterprise. This easy-to-use app enables both materials experts and non-experts to generate material model coefficients from their experimental test data in 6 steps.?

For rubber-like materials, users can calibrate the hyperelastic material coefficients using the curve fitting tool with a high degree of accuracy. The resultant material model coefficients can then be shared via Granta MI? Enterprise across the simulation team – making it accessible in Engineering Data in Ansys Workbench.
