Coaching is a catalyst for change

The Answers You Seek Aren't in Google

Nowadays, if you want to know how to solve a particular problem, you can type it into Google and unearth a mountain of strategies on how to solve it.

Maybe you're an HR, L&D or Senior Leader and want to know:

Maybe your a #teamleader or #middlemanager and want to know:

  • How do I support my #team to adapt to all the changes at work when I'm struggling to adapt and 'be the change' myself?
  • How can I be more #resilient and positive for my team when I'm struggling to juggle competing demands without burning out myself?
  • How do I make time for #learningeveryday and keep developing my skills when I'm just trying to get through my mile long to-do list each day?!

So you look up some strategies, download some resources, try them out.?

Maybe they work.

But what if they don't??

It doesn't mean they're not good strategies; many of them are tried and tested, validated by hours of research on 100's or 1000's of people.??

It's because of what gets in the way. What stops us.

Us.?

Our thoughts, and feelings, which keep us from acting.?

OR?

Maybe we DO try these strategies, but they don't quite work for us - what then?!?

According to Dr. Robert Cialdini , a leading expert on influence, when people feel uncertain, "they don’t look inside themselves for answers—all they see is ambiguity and their own lack of confidence. Instead, they look outside for sources of information that can reduce their uncertainty. The first thing they look to is authority: 'What do the experts think about this topic'?"

And Dan Heath and Chip Heath write in their book "Switch - How to Change When Change is Hard" that when we don't know what to do, we're hard wired to look to others for clues on how to behave.?

We know that following the steps that someone else has done to solve a problem or be successful makes sense and can save alot of unnecessary trial and error. I'm all for that.

But what I've found is that ultimately, solving our own problems comes down to the individual and how they apply that strategy, in a way that works for them.

When it comes to changing behaviour or culture, whether it's person, a team or a company, - one size does not fit all.??It can't possibly be the same as we're all unique individuals with our own beliefs, biases, and habits formed out of our life experiences.

We need to learn how to tap into our greatest resource - ourselves.

Coaching can help us do that.

The greatest value I give my clients as a #coach is not the specific tools or techniques I use (although I do have plenty of those).??

The value I give them is that I empower them to think for themselves and find their own answers.

  • Open up their self awareness and blind spots.?
  • Develop their mindset and emotional intelligence
  • Untangle their thoughts to find a clear direction
  • Remind them of their strengths to feel more confident and resilient, able to manage whatever challenge life throws at them
  • Realign with their values and find a sense of purpose that motivates them
  • Educate them about why they believe, think, feel and act the way they do
  • Find strategies to manage their mind and take action towards their goals
  • Help them reflect on their learning so they can adapt and improve

One of my coach trainers and mentors, Kris Robertson used to say it didn't matter whether our client achieved their goals or not,?it was the learning.?

The learning they gained whilst striving for the goal.

Its's our ability self reflect, learn and adapt that helps us change and transform.

We're absolutely drowning in information right now. There's not that many brand new ideas, it's mostly the same information packaged up in a different way.

What we need is transformation.

Transformation happens from within us.

The answers you seek aren't in Google; they're inside your head

And inside the heads of all the people in your organisation

Coaching can help you find those answers, much faster than trying to work it out on your own.

Love this Kris Thorne - Behaviour and Culture Change Specialist. I think we can 100% get lost in our intellect trying to solve a ‘challenge’. However, if we can slow our thinking, get present in the moment, then we have a chance to access original thought.

Great article Kris Completely agree that we’re drowning in information. I always say information is useless unless you apply it and act on it. We often don’t do this because of the conscious and unconscious thoughts and beliefs we haves Coaching is an amazing way to raise awareness, challenge in a supportive way and help someone find solutions for themselves to take inspired action

Greta article Kris with brilliant insights. It's also why our weekly Designer Drop-Ins are so incredibly helpful - the answers (or ideas/inspiration) come from the group, NOT from Google!!!
