"The Answer To A Question No One Asked!"

"The Answer To A Question No One Asked!"

Bob Lutz, the venerable automotive executive, leader and innovator, led major vehicle renaissance efforts at global automotive organizations. ?I had the pleasure to work with Bob when he was Vice Chairman of product development, design, and innovation at General Motors.

During that time I witnessed Bob offer quips that summed up even the most complex situation providing a learning moment and cracking a smile at the same time. ?

One such time came during a product planning meeting where the discussion focused on the GMC Envoy XUV - a mix between SUV and pickup. The vehicle wasn’t selling and after much back and forth by the team, Bob looked up and said this was a case of it being “an answer to a question no one asked!”

Brilliant! ?

The vehicle had many features including the ability to treat the storage area much like a pick-up with a center opening but none supported the need to purchase.? Thus, the SUV wasn’t relevant. ? While there is treasure trove of Lutz quotes to pull from my tenure at GM the other one that comes to mind was whenever we were in a strategy meeting. ?The goal of such sessions was to address important issues with a new mindset. He would let the discussion take shape and then challenge everyone with an incredible insight such as “being able to think ‘outside the box’ presupposes you were able to think in it.” This would always get things back on track and clearly set the right path forward.

The power of insight in leadership and communications cannot be overstated.? Cutting to the point.? Grasping the cause and not the symptom.? Capturing the real substance.? All of it saves time.? Harnesses resources.? Improves learning.

Bob Lutz’ leadership style and communications approach separated him among business leaders.? Luckily, he continues to capture the state of things in autos, business, and society. ?

He is an inspiration to many and to this communications dude, a mentor and friend also!

Gary F Grates this is always one of my favorite quotes from you. Thought-provoking and true, my friend. Regrettably, it seems leaders in our profession often are answering questions no one asked. It’s a race to being irrelevant.
