As 2024 ends, we’ll share highlights from the year's first half.
What a year it has been! As we reflect on the highlights of 2024, we are excited to share a few key moments and milestones with you.
Participating in the annual WEF meeting in Davos provided DMI with a unique opportunity to engage in critical global discussions, gain insights, and share expertise with Norwegian companies, particularly in the realm of Indo-Nordic collaboration. At Davos, sustainability is no longer seen as a trend but as a core business imperative. Leaders increasingly acknowledge that social and environmental responsibility is not only essential for the planet but also integral to long-term financial success. As we look ahead, the focus must be on developing business models that drive profitability while creating meaningful positive impacts on society and the environment.

The ongoing Indo-Nordic Cooperation, marked by Summits in 2018 (Sweden), 2022 (Denmark), and the upcoming 2025 event in Norway, underscores a shared commitment to collaborative and collective action. This commitment is vital for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Central to this strategy is the emphasis on renewable energy, innovation through startups, and new technologies. These elements are crucial for transforming ambitions into tangible outcomes. Reflecting on the inspiring discussions at the first Indo-Nordic Industry Dialogue on Sustainability in Davos, companies from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and India came together to share their thoughts on the way forward towards achieving the SDGs.

The free trade agreement between EFTA countries and India will enable duty-free access for Indian exports to Norway and Norwegian exports to India. The agreement also includes requirements for respecting human rights, with a dedicated body established to monitor compliance. What opportunities and challenges will increased trade with India bring for Norwegian and Indian businesses, particularly import companies? These topics were discussed at the seminar in June.

Spotlight on Gender Equality: Insights from India and the Nordics
Join us as we delve into Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) in our upcoming podcast series, proudly supported by the Nordic Council of Ministers. Tune in to explore insightful discussions and stories driving change!
Gender equality isn’t just a goal—it’s a necessity. It’s the cornerstone of a peaceful, just, and sustainable world. The benefits of achieving gender equality ripple across societies, fostering prosperity and safety for all. Yet, at the current rate of progress, it will take 132 years to close the global gender gap. That’s a sobering reality.
India, while making strides, still faces deeply entrenched challenges. Patriarchal norms and systemic barriers hinder women's full participation in society. Although India's ranking on gender equality indices improved from 122 in 2021 to 108 in 2022, progress must accelerate. Enforcing laws, fostering representation, and promoting cultural change are crucial steps forward.
In contrast, Nordic countries, recognized as global leaders in gender equality, still face systemic disparities. Norway employs action plans and cross-sectoral efforts to tackle these issues. Similarly, Denmark emphasizes freedom and equality, although challenges like the gender pay gap and social control among immigrant women persist. Finland’s success in women’s political representation and Iceland’s achievements in closing the gender gap showcase progress, but workplace leadership gaps remain. Sweden continues to invest heavily in combating violence against women and promoting shared parental leave.

Bridging India and the Nordics
The business world remains predominantly male, especially in C-suite roles. Why does this gender gap persist?
Key factors include systemic barriers, unconscious bias, lack of representation, challenges in work-life balance, limited access to mentorship, and insufficient advocacy from male allies. Cultural norms, unequal opportunities, and even gaps in women supporting women further compound the issue.
In our upcoming podcasts, we explore these challenges and share insights from women thriving in male-dominated sectors, highlighting solutions to foster a more inclusive, equitable business landscape.
Despite differences, India and the Nordics share an opportunity to learn from each other. While Nordic countries can benefit from India’s lessons in rapid transformation, India can draw inspiration from the Nordics’ institutional frameworks and gender inclusion policies.
Together, they can drive a stronger gender inclusion agenda.
