Another Way
This week’s track is Another Way by Seven Lions with vocals by April Bender.
I’ve always loved Metal and rock music, but at the age of 14 I found Seven Lions, and was hooked. The track that I will be talking about is Another Way by Seven Lions with guest vocalist, April Bender.
Throughout his catalogue, Seven Lions has always incorporated female vocals in his music. Examples include, Days To Come featuring Australian Fiora, and Worlds Apart featuring Estonian Kerli. In an interview from 2013 with THUMP, he described female vocals as “the ultimate instrument”. What I love about female vocals is the essence of beauty and grace that they can add to a track by sounding delicate and ethereal to bold and powerful and it’s why I still enjoy listening to bands like Nightwish and Echos and even they are completely different bands, the use of female vocals seems to add so much more than male vocals.
What I loved about this song in particular, is that it combines the brutal nature of Dubstep with the melodic and powerful side of trance. Something that I loved when I first heard this track. I also noticed the tempo shift. Normally, the songs that Seven Lions make have all been in 140 BPM, but this time the track has been shifted to 150 BPM. It caught me off guard but in a good way, because it still maintains the head banging theme that comes from his background of heavy metal music.
When it comes to inspiration, there are many things that can help. Some involve taking long walks, some involve research and learning about a particular genre. Seven Lions, however, has always used different inspirations for his music. His first influences were Heavy Metal bands such as Opeth and Storm Corrosion. The transition into Electronic came about after his move to San Francisco where he began listening to Industrial music and then Trance music. This is evident on his latest release: Seven Lions 1999 Remix - EP.
