Another Snowstorm at the Beach!
Good afternoon all,
Cold enough for ya??Many areas in the central and eastern U.S. have seen bitter cold conditions as of late.?While the cold temperatures are in place, here comes the next weather system to add to the seasonal snowfall for many of you.?Currently, Norfolk, VA (7.2" of snow) is doubling up on Richmond's total (3.6").?This next storm will add to the differential.?And, just like last time, the heaviest amounts will be right along the coastline from VA to ME.??
Here's what is happening in the atmosphere -?There's going to be a "phasing" of features in the jet stream (that fast moving current of air at around 30,000 feet).?The models are having difficulty gauging the time and place of this phasing.?Some models are outputting, like last time, tremendous snowfall amounts that look to (again) be in error.?However, there's agreement that a surface low pressure system will develop Friday night off the Carolina coast.?A high pressure system over eastern Canada will provide a tightening of the surface pressure gradient/winds.?So, while this email will focus on snowfall totals, some very high winds and coastal flooding will occur with this system.?Winds gusting over 65 mph are expected over Cape Cod by Saturday.?Wind + Snow + Very Cold Temperatures = Blizzard conditions probable for eastern MA, RI, eastern CT, coastal NH and coastal ME.??

Here's what to expect and when -?There's an area of over-running moisture for the mountains of NC, TN, VA, and WV that will give a quick inch or two of snow for Friday evening.?Then the "phasing" described above occurs Friday night and Saturday.?For some of you (Philly, D.C., and Baltimore) this will be a "near miss".?Here's my selected cities snowfall totals:?Raleigh, NC, Richmond, VA, Annapolis, MD, Dover, DE, Newark, NJ, and Springfield, MA - around 1 inch.?Rocky Mount, NC, Williamsburg, VA, Danbury, CT, West Point, VA, and NYC - 2 or 3 inches of snow.?Kill Devil Hills, NC, Norfolk, VA, Ocean City, MD, Hartford, CT, Cromwell, CT, Manchester, NH, and Atlantic City, NJ - 4 or 5 inches of snow.?New London, CT, Montauk, NY, Providence, RI, and Boston, MA - 6" - 8" of snow.?Chatham, MA and Portland, ME - 9" - 12" of snow.?The snow in New England primarily occurs between 2 PM and 11 PM on Saturday.??
Then what???Ol' Man takes a short break for the start of February.?Many locations from the Midwest through the Mid-Atlantic and up to New England will see a warm-up for February's first four days.?Might even hit 65 degrees on Feb. 3rd at VA Beach!?A sharp contrast to the picture attached.?Contact me for forecasts/comments/concerns.?Take care!
