Another look at IP Ratings
GK Services
By overmoulding it is possible to prevent water ingress completely, even if the cable jacket is breached.
The term "IP Rating" is so second nature to us, that we forget that not everyone speaks in the same code. To us, the IP Rating is important. And, whether you know it or not, if you are looking for an overmoulded connector that will help you protect your equipment, the IP Rating is also important to you.
What the rating illustrates is exactly how resistant a connector is against ingress of solids, chemicals, and water. It also details whether a connector is durable or is suitable for high voltage machinery.
Because it is important, and reasonably complex, we thought we would revisit the IP Rating for you.
How to understand the IP Rating system.
The first thing to know is that the IP Rating system is internationally recognised. No matter where you are from, where your equipment is manufactured, or where you are purchasing the connectors from, the rating is still the same.
An IP Rating looks like this: IP55S.?After the IP, each digit has a specific meaning to help you determine how suitable the product is for you needs.
Here is how you understand the system.
First digit: Solids
The first thing the IP rating demonstrates is how resistant the product is against solids.?Whether you are protecting against dust, fingers, or ants, this table will help you understand how protective your product is.

Second digit: fluids
Our main concern, here at GK Services, is providing cables that prevent water ingress.?That’s why our overmoulded connectors have a high second digit on all our products.?This table will help you understand how effective your product is against fluid ingress.
Third Digit: Supplementary information
Sometimes on an IP rating you will find a letter at the end of the code.?This digit gives useful information about the product that will help determine whether the product is fit for your intended purpose.
Feel free to contact us to discuss it further
If you are ever unsure about whether or not a product is suitable for you, it is always best to discuss it with someone with experience.?Please feel to contact us to discuss IP Ratings and what they mean.
