Another Fasnacht passing us by.
As an artist and Basel resident since late 2015, the carnival was an event that grew on me. It wasn’t just the array of fantastical costumes, or the rich, sometimes brassy, certainly lively marching band music. Neither was it the display of excesses; the tons of confetti, sugary sweets, oranges, and roses showered on rule-following spectators sticking to invisible barriers, nor the let-your-hair-down participants. But rather the sense of community that permeated the atmosphere in the many months leading up to Fasnacht.
This year the weather would have been perfect! As I walk the near-empty streets of Basel, I remember the color and ingenuity of Fasnacht of yesteryears. I witnessed a few stirrings of music, played either on speaker or by a handful of lone drummers.
Yet, reading the messages in the shop windows, I can only guess that the cliques will have something rather outstanding the next time around and I am excited in anticipation of what is to come!
